唧唧複唧唧，木蘭當戶織。
不聞機杼聲，惟聞女歎息。
Click, clack, click, clack, click, clack,
Through threads Mulan’s shuttle moves forth and back.
No sound of her weaving shuttle
All could hear her sighing “alack., alack.”
問女何所思，問女何所憶。
女亦無所思，女亦無所憶。
“Dear daughter, oh, what’s hassling you?
“What has made you suffer a mood of blue?”
“Dear Dad, nothing has bothered me,
昨夜見軍帖，可汗大點兵。
軍書十二卷，卷卷有爺名。
She saw a conscription last night,
Khan was enlisting his subjects to fight.
There were twelve military rolls,
On every roll her dad’s name was in sight.
阿爺無大兒，木蘭無長兄。
願為市鞍馬，從此替爺征。
No male firstborn to her dear dad,
Therefore, no elder brother Mulan had
She’d buy a saddle and a horse,
In her dad’s stead, she’d join th’ troop as a lad.
東市買駿馬，西市買鞍韉，
南市買轡頭，北市買長鞭。
In the east fair, a steed she bought,
In the west market, a saddle she got.
In the south fair, a bridal-wear,
In the north market, for a whip she sought.
旦辭爺娘去，暮宿黃河邊。
不聞爺娘喚女聲，但聞黃河流水鳴濺濺。
At dawn, she bade her folks goodbye,
At dusk, the Yellow River she lay nigh.
She couldn't hear summons from her folks,
But only the yellow river’s loud roar and cry.
旦辭黃河去，暮至黑山頭。
不聞爺娘喚女聲，但聞燕山胡騎鳴啾啾。
At dawn, she left the riverside,
At dusk, the Mountain hight Black she espied.
She couldn’t hear summons from her folks
But Turk’s horses at Mt. Yan neigh from far and wide.
萬裏赴戎機，關山度若飛。
朔氣傳金柝，寒光照鐵衣。
From miles away to the frontier,
Through Mt. Guan, as if she’d flown, she cut clear.
The north wind echoed the night-gong,
The cold moon brightly shined her battle gear.
將軍百戰死，壯士十年歸。
歸來見天子，天子坐明堂。
Few generals remained alive,
Though a war of ten years, she did survive.
All warriors in Khan’s hall,
khan lauded them for so much they did strive.
策勳十二轉，賞賜百千強。
可汗問所欲，木蘭不用尚書郎，
The highest honour Khan bestowed,
The gifts Khan granted many a carload.
Khan asked Mulan what rank she’d like,
No crave for any high rank Mulan showed.
願馳千裏足，送兒還故鄉。
爺娘聞女來，出郭相扶將；
But she would prefer a swift steed,
Hence, gallop home in no time at all she’d.
Her folks heard their Mulan returned,
Both rushed out to meet her at fastest speed.
阿姊聞妹來，當戶理紅妝；
小弟聞姊來，磨刀霍霍向豬羊。
Her sis rouged her cheeks, as she learnt,
Mulan, from the battlefields she returned.
When her younger bro heard this news,
He honed his knife, barbecued meat, the grill he turned.
開我東閣門，坐我西閣床。
脫我戰時袍，著我舊時裳。
Inside, she opened the east door,
Sitting on her bed in west of boudoir
She took off her heavy armour,
And then put on what she normally wore.
當窗理雲鬢，對鏡帖花黃。
出門看火伴，火伴皆驚忙：
The windows saw her do her hair,
The mirror watched her don bloomy headwear.
Now out to see her old comrades,
She dazzled them her countenance so fair.
同行十二年，不知木蘭是女郎。
雄兔腳撲朔，雌兔眼迷離；
Together for o’er a decade,
They never knew Mulan was in fact a fair maid.
Jack keeps pawing his fluffy feet,
Jill oft squints, thus an eyeline can be made.
雙兔傍地走，安能辨我是雄雌？
Both stroll side by side as all see,
Who could tell which one of the two is he or she?
