坐時聞落葉，靜住是出家。  

從來斷思量，不覺淚沾巾。

 

Meditation by Ryōkan

 

I, seated, hear each falling leaf,

My heart transcends the mortal fief.

Long have I sundered worldly thoughts,

Tears damp my kerchief, past belief.
