A Ballad by Cao Cao

While quaffing, sing I bring a blast,

How long may our life last?

Like early morning dew it seems,

Alack, time hastens past.

I’d chant loud with spirit divine,

Yet fret o’er cause of mine.

Alas, what may ease my great grief?

Naught but Dukang wine.

O blue attire the wisest wear,

E’er in mind do I bear.

For thee have I chant’d on and on,

Beseeching here and there.

O bleating deer in brown or grey,

Afield they feed and play.

I regale my special guests with

The lute and flute this day.

Bright, bright illuminates the moon,

Shall I pluck it — how soon?

O, too much grief seizes my heart,

Where tis e’er gnawed and hewn.

Athwart many fields — lines meet lanes,

Thou far’st hither with strains.

Throughout the feast we tete-a-tete,

Our old friendship remains.

Though few stars, the bright moon still glows,

South fly the long-tailed crows.

Thrice circling each tree, they wonder

Where to perch — yet none knows.

Too high a peak, nay, ne’er there be,

Nor too deep any sea.

As did Duke Zhou, I'd leave my meal —

Whene'er rocs flock to me.
