論詩三十首（二十三）金 – 元好問

 

曲學虛荒小說欺，俳諧怒罵豈詩宜？

今人合笑古人拙，除卻雅言都不知。

 

A Quatrain by Yuan Hao-wen (Jin Dynasty)

 

How could the verse be: “shoddy, shabby, sham,”

In which derision, absurd jests do cram?

But our bards now laugh at the stiff ancients  —

“Ah, none but grace that everywhere did jam.”
