I heard a fly buzz when I died;

The stillness round my form

Was like the stillness in the air

Between the heaves of storm.



The eyes beside had wrung them dry,

And breaths were gathering sure

For that last onset, when the king

Be witnessed in his power.



I willed my keepsakes, signed away

What portion of me I

Could make assignable,-and then

There interposed a fly,



With blue, uncertain, stumbling buzz,

Between the light and me;

And then the windows failed, and then

I could not see to see.

出現在我和光中間;

【1】無法知道作者是指基督教中的上帝或是死神, 故不做推繹, 由讀者體會。

2】不是屋子的窗, 是意識與存在之間的耦合之窗。

3】如果看不見, 作為看的主體, 其功能還存在; 如果不能從視覺的通道知道能否在看,即-我看不見‘去看’, 說明主體的功能消失, 意味死亡降臨。  我想著者是試圖通過這種矛盾的語言達到用生者的經驗去描寫死者的體驗, 因此保留直譯但在‘去看’上加了引號。
