Simple Life by Lu You
I drink but ne’er let myself drown in wine,
When hosting guests, I always shun excess.
I read for leisure and pleasure of mine,
No forced perusal, no burdens me stress.
Alone, by the sill, oft I take my seat,
Hands in sleeves, I let the hourglass flow by.
I sought no such life of Taoist retreat,
Though unbidden, ‘tis here — I don‘t deny.
O, all seasons becharm man nigh and far,
Yet truly, fresh-born autumn stirs me most.
Beside wild creeks, my thatched door stays ajar,
For old neighbours, at times, chat with the host.
