A Verse by Tao Yuanming

(Imbibing Wine)

Albeit I built my hut in this loud world,

To mine ear, the din of wagons I hear not.

Hence, ye must wonder how I could do so,

“A placid mind can be stirred up by naught.”

I’d fain glean chrysanthe by the eastern hedge,

Or watch the South Mount, soon lost in my thought.

The dusk-clad mountain appears so serene,

Sights of birds in pairs homeward I oft caught,

The scenes reveal a profound truth of life,

For which I’d word, but the words I forgot.
