金陵晚望 — （唐）高蟾

 

曾伴浮雲歸晚翠，猶陪落日泛秋聲。
世間無限丹青手，一片傷心畫不成。

 

Twilit View of Jinling by Gao Chan (Tang Dynasty)

 

Once she gazed on the sun sinking in autumn’s sough,

And eke beheld the clouds fade into twilit green.

Though countless deft painters, to whom the world doth bow,

None could render her heartbreak in a single scene.
