The Arrival of a Dear Guest by Du Fu
South of my cot, north of my cot, spring streams ne’er rest,
Where only gulls, day after day, gather and glide.
The petal-strewn path lieth unswept for any guest,
But for thee today e’en my thatched door opeth wide.
Far from the marts, thus homely fare have we in store,
Poor as my cot, some old homebrew I may provide.
If thou mind’st not drinking with the old man next door,
I’d as lief call him quick over to our fireside.
