Let Us Drink by Li Bai

Dost thou not see

The Yellow River from the sky

Rush down into the sea

And ne’er back again hie?

Dost thou not behold

The bright glass hanging in the high hall

Grieving my grey locks I now hold —

Black at dawn, yet white when dusk doth fall?

O, thou shalt relish thy best time,

And ne’er let thy unfilled goblets gawp at the moon.

Ay, my talents must needs have use in their prime;

All gold spent shall surely come back soon.

To feast and revel, let us cook mutton and veal,

With which we quaff three hundred cups of wine.

O Cen and Dan-Qiu, prithee quaff with zeal,

Never shall my dear chums decline.

And eke allow me to sing a song

To which, pray, ye lend your ears.

For music and dainty fare, we shall not long,

Yet wish we be intoxicated for years.

All sages felt lonely in olden days,

Yet only tipplers have left their indelible names.

In ancient times, Lord Chen feasted in his own ways —

Ten thousand coins for a sip — such gleeful games.

Dear host, how couldst thou bare thy coffers low?

Pray bring us more wine and let us swig more.

Of my dappled steed and fur coat I shall let go —

Ay, I will bid the boy swap them for wine galore,

Henceforth, let fine wine drown our eon-long woe.
