長幹曲四首 – 崔顥

 

君家何處住？妾住在橫塘。

停船暫借問，或恐是同鄉。

 

Dear sir, may I ask thee from where thou art?

I am from a place, Hengtang is its name.

Couldst thou mind halting thy boat? For I feel

Thou and I could be from the town selfsame.  

 

家臨九江水，來去九江側。

同是長幹人，自小不相識。

 

My home is by the river of Jiujiang,

Along its shores I often to and fro.

Though we are from the same town, sith childhood,

We, each other, have never got to know.

 

下渚多風浪，蓮舟漸覺稀。

那能不相待？獨自逆潮歸。

 

Xiazhu is a place of oft waves and winds,

‘Tis less lotus-picking boats on this side.

So, how could I not come forth to greet thee,

Ere thou return’st alone against the tide?

 

三江潮水急，五湖風浪湧。

由來花性輕，莫畏蓮舟重。

 

So rapid the tides in the Three Rivers,

So rough the winds and waves in the Five Lakes.

Maidens like me as dainty as flowers,

Prithee, no fear of the weight thy boat takes.
