《當你老了》是葉芝年輕時寫給昴德·岡昂（Maud Gonne）的一首情詩。葉芝在他25歲時遇到時年23歲的岡昂，被她的美貌和風采所吸引，愛上了她。葉芝是這麽描述初見岡昂的情景，“她佇立窗畔，身旁盛開著一大團蘋果花；她光彩奪目，仿佛自身就是灑滿了陽光的花瓣。” 岡昂不僅是漂亮的演員，而且是愛爾蘭獨立運動戰士，岡昂亦頗為仰慕葉芝的才華，不過，他們倆最終還是沒有走進婚姻的殿堂。葉芝曾幾次向岡昂求婚，均未成功。葉芝卻終生愛著岡昂，為她癡迷。岡昂對葉芝後來的詩歌創作影響很大，葉芝為她寫下了不少的詩，這首唯美浪漫，散發著淡淡惆悵的《當你老了》就是其中一首。葉芝，這位20世紀愛爾蘭詩人，“以其高度藝術化且洋溢著靈感的詩作表達了整個民族的靈魂”（ "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." ），於1923年獲得諾貝爾文學獎。
