When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
Yeats)的這首《當你老了》(When You Are Old),還是多年前,在大學的時候。 葉芝在詩中深情地寫道:“How many loved your moments of glad grace,And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,And loved the sorrows of your changing face;How many loved your moments of glad grace, but one man loved the pilgrim soul in you."
葉芝,這位20世紀愛爾蘭詩人,“以其高度藝術化且洋溢著靈感的詩作表達了整個民族的靈魂”( "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation."
