(Night of old lanes)

(Series of Poems) Imagination of the Old City of Montreal, Part Four: Night in the Old Alley
By Li Li

Is the sky painted by twilight,
Have the birds returned to their nests?

Have the old alleys, secluded and quiet,
Seen the flowers bloom?

The birds settle in the sadness of the old windowsills,
The flowers bloom by the narrow alleys, compressed by time.

As twilight sweeps across the streets again and again,
The cobblestones shine, having shed the weight of the years.

An ancient legend dons a trendy leather jacket,
Wears a modern duckbill cap, yet wrinkles crawl up the eaves.

Was it yesterday, in the gallery,
That a picture frame seemed to hold the faded years?

Nostalgia rises from the cups at the outdoor café,
Letting sadness climb the carved railing.

The church bells don’t understand the silence of the street lamps,
But a dove sleeps by their light.

The drifting music gently wraps around a woman’s elegant neck,
Around a man’s sensual wrist, but the smile is somewhat ambiguous.

The tour carriage, full of starlight, wanders down the street,
The sound of hooves shatters the pale August night.
