Color Flow Imaging Basics: Color and M-mode Imaging

You may also find color flow imaging helpful during M-mode studies. CFI superimposed on the M-mode display gives specific detail about the timing and duration of jets. In the following example the patient has both mitral and aortic insufficiancy.  Aortic insufficiency (AI), indicated by the mosaic of colors in the left ventricular outflow tract in diastole, and Mitral insufficiency (MI), indicated by the mosaic of colors in the closed mitral valve in systole.

The M-mode visualization of the jets confirms that the aortic insufficiency occurs in early diastole, and that the mitral insufficiency is holosystolic.
