我曾對奧巴馬總統充滿希望,覺得他的勝選標誌著美國向著人人生而平等的理念前進了一大步,但他卻在2010年代表美國人民說了一句令人從頭冷到腳的大實話:“如果十多億中國人都和美國人或澳大利亞人現在一樣生活,那我們就都會苦不堪言,這個世界會不堪重負”( “if over a billion Chinese citizens have the same living patterns as Australians and Americans do right now then all of us are in for a very miserable time, the planet just can't sustain it”)。
OK, that’s an interesting idea,”)。
他接著問孩子們,“我們能容許中國人活下來嗎?”(“Should we allow the Chinese to live?”)
有個女孩說容許,因為如果我們不讓他們活,他們就會想來殺我們(“If we don’t allow them to live, then they’ll try to kill us”)。
他在他的電視節目裏說,今天很怪異,有人對我不高興(“You know, today is a weird day。 There seems to be a lot of people upset with me, more upset than usual.”)
或許你不同意別人說的話,但保護言論自由是我們國家的基石之一(“ The First Amendment of the Constitution protects free speech, even if individuals might personally find it offensive or distasteful. It may be upsetting when people say things we might personally disagree with, but the principle of protected free speech is an important part of who we are as a nation”)。
(按英文翻譯: “Should you encounter the enemy, he will be defeated! No quarter will be given! Prisoners will not be taken! Whoever falls into your hands is forfeited. Just as a thousand years ago the Huns under their King Attila made a name for themselves, one that even today makes them seem mighty in history and legend, may the name German be affirmed by you in such a way in China that no Chinese will ever again dare to look cross-eyed at a German.”)
(Tony) In the same vein, he (Obama) goes on to say:
You know if you talk to Chinese leaders I think they will acknowledge immediately that if over a billion Chinese citizens have the same living patterns as Australians and Americans do right now then all of us are in for a very miserable time, the planet just can’t sustain it, so they understand that they’ve got to make a decision about a new model that is more sustainable that allows them to pursue the economic growth that they’re pursuing while at the same time dealing with these environmental consequences. So I think they understand intellectually. Right now though their understandable impulse is to say well let’s let the developed countries, the Australia’s, and the America’s deal with this problem first and we’ll get to it when we’ve caught up a little bit in terms of our standard of living. The point we’ve tried to make is we can’t, we can’t allow China to wait.
(Tony) This indicates to me that he has some idea of how those Chinese people do not have access to the lifestyle that we have, and that access to electrical power that we all have, and that for them to come up to our level will result in significantly greater CO2 emissions. Then he literally just throws them all under the bus with the statement in bold there, effectively saying that we can’t stand by and allow them to have the standard of living that we accept as a way of life.
