“忍性”在古中國是上等美德，孟子說“天將降大任於是人也…所以動心忍性，曾益其所不能。” 在古代西方也有一派強調“忍性”的修身哲學，泛稱為“斯多葛主義”，其中最著名的可能要算公元二世紀時的古羅馬皇帝馬可·奧勒留， 他留下了一本《沉思錄》，闡述了他所推崇的美德。據前總理溫家寶在任時的一次公開講話，他對《沉思錄》極端推崇，“這本書天天放在我的床頭，我可能讀了有100遍，天天都在讀。” 這麽說，溫家寶是一個現代中國的斯多葛主義者。究其原因，實際上是因為斯多葛主義與中國傳統文化中的很多精髓是息息相通的。

這個分句的意思是：如果所有你周圍的人喪失了他們的理智，還把這一切都怪到你頭上， 而你還能保持理智。吉卜林 沒有用書麵詞匯“rational”來指理智，而是用了一個口語中習用的借喻“head”（字麵意義是“頭”），這樣讓句子非常口語化，符合一個父親對一個未成年孩子講話的口氣。“keep your head ”不是件容易事，但吉卜林又在後麵加上“when all about you are losing theirs ”，那就更難了。然而吉卜林沒有止於此，又繼續加上“and blaming it on you”，那就是難上加難了。吉卜林簡單地使用一個連詞“when”和一個連詞“and ”，就讓句子內容的深度層層遞進，超凡脫俗。這樣的手法，在該詩中還出現多次。
曾國藩曾言"二十年來治一怒字，尚未清磨得盡，以是知克己最難。"， 也是以”製怒“為難得的美德。

這句話在老年人讀來真是十分動人。你已經奮鬥了一生，你的工具都已經磨損了，你自己也早已不似當年了吧？但你還是要鼓起勇氣重新開始。

man：成年的男人。但英語中“You are the man”是常用恭維話，相當於“你真厲害，是個人物”，所以這裏“you’ll be a Man”是一句雙關語，既是“你就長大了（不再是個孩子了）；也是你就很了不起了（是個偉大的人物了）”
這是這個超長句子的主句； 意思是：（如果你能作到上述那些）那麽你就擁有了這整個地球和上麵的一切 — 更重要的是 — 我的兒子，你就長大了，成為了一個了不起的人物了。
