(Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal)

(Series of Poems) Imagination of the Old City of Montreal, Part One: Notre-Dame Basilica
By Li Li
With the fragrance of a single rose,
I wrap a devout heart,
Offering it at the gates of God,
Then unlocking two centuries
Of prayers and hymns.
But what does it change?
Sunlight filters through stained glass windows of history,
Preaching the will of heaven.
On the cross, Jesus still suffers.
This is the greatest injustice
In the history of the world.
Yet only through your sacrifice
Can peace prevail.
Your resurrection on the third day
Let faith’s very essence
Multiply wildly
In the flash of death’s electric light.
Hands clasped in prayer,
Let the organ’s whispers gaze back upon life.
Hymns for your past and present
Take flight on the wings of angels.
A flickering candle flame
Relentlessly illuminates
The path God has shown to all.
