序言

Preface

 

Neuroscience research has shown us that early childhood is a time of tremendous brain development. From birth to age 8, a child’s brain develops more rapidly than at any other time in life. Moreover, early brain development has a lasting impact on a child’s ability to learn and succeed in school and life. Although the brain continues to develop and change into adulthood, the first eight years can build a foundation for future learning, health and life success. Children are more successful in school and beyond if they are given a strong foundation in the earliest years of their lives. In this book, Dr. Luo points out that the Early Childhood Education teacher has a unique opportunity to help build that foundation in order to improve academic and social behavioral outcomes for children from birth through third grade.

 

The book discusses how teachers can improve the school readiness skills of young children and how they can positively influence children's early learning and development. Professor Luo addresses critical questions in the field of Early Education such as: How do early learning experiences and school readiness approaches affect young children’s language, literacy, early mathematics, and social-emotional skills? How can the quality of Early Education practices and early education programs be improved? What types of professional development best support teachers’ and caregivers’ needs? Effective education requires teachers who understand that children develop rapidly during the early years physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Young children need to feel included secure and valued, so that teachers must work to understand children’s developmental needs on an individual basis. The book encourages educators and parents to work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect, so that children can develop a sense of security and confidence as learners. In sum, Dr. Luo has written an important and timely book for Early Education teachers, which should inspire new teachers to deepen their understanding of child development, and learn to see and respect young children as capable and serious learners and thinkers.

羅妮麗（Nili Luo） 博士，美國西南學院早期兒童教育係主任、教授；美國早期兒童教育項目評定委員會評委；美國幼兒教育協會（NAEYC）執行董事（2013年—2017年）。曾出版有《課程設置》（美國國際兒童研究出版社）、《領養父母的行為過程》（德國VDM出版社）、《優秀兒女與分離教育》（美國中信出版社）等書，並在《早期兒童教育》、《早期兒童教師教學研究》、《領養》、《挑戰》和《中信》等美國多家刊物上發表教育方麵文章。

 

Dr. Nili Luo is the Director and Professor of Early Childhood Education at Southwestern College in the U.S. She was a chief program reviewer for Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (NCATE) and served in the National Association of Early Childhood Education (NAEYC) (2013-2017) as the governor board member at large. She has published many books such as The Intersection of Chinese philosophical traditions and UDL: Exploring current practice in Chinese Early Childhood Classrooms.( Routledge) The Adoptive Parenting Process: A Study of the Experiences of Parents Who Adopt Infant Girls from China. (VDM Verlag) ；Raising a Godly Adult.(CCM).She has published articles in many professional journals in the United States such as "Early Child Education", "Early Child Teacher Teaching Research", "Adoption", "Challenge" and“Chinese Today".
