家庭
[編輯]其父為作家蕭馬（嚴敦勛）。[13]蕭馬在階級鬥爭中被打為“右派”，移居安徽省馬鞍山市後夫妻離異。後來，蕭馬與曾在電影《紅旗譜》中演出的俞平結婚，俞平即成為嚴歌苓的繼母。[14]
嚴歌苓的第一任丈夫是作家李準的兒子李克威，後兩人離異[3]。其後嚴歌苓再婚，丈夫王樂仁（Lawrence A. Walker）為美國國務院外交官，曾任美國在台協會台北辦事處新聞科長[15]，兩人育有一位養女妍妍[16]。

Lawrence A. Walker is the translator of Geling Yan’s White Snake and Other Stories and editor of her English-language work, notably The Banquet Bug (aka The Uninvited). A native of California, he holds a degree in Languages and Linguistics from Georgetown University, an M.B.A. from the University of Illinois and a Master’s in Administration and Management from the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. He has previously served at diplomatic postings in Shenyang and Taipei, Germany, Mexico and Nigeria as well as at the State Department. In the private sector, he has worked in international trade promotion, venture capital and business development in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, German, French and Spanish and is proficient in several other languages. He lives in Berlin. He currently translates exclusively the work of the author Yan Geling (嚴歌苓). He recently finished translating her epic work 陸犯焉識， The Criminal Lu Yanshi.
