Let me tell you more about how I felt after reading your story about C. I went to bed after posting my comment. All of a sudden, a scary thought flashed through my mind. I imagined myself in the cultural revolution time and made the comment about Mao. I would sure be shredded into pieces. I was siezed by fear, which is far less from the horror people really went through during that time. I remembered when I was young, years after 1976, my parents had the habbit of burning paper or letters. I was puzzled by their secretive behavior but now I can relate better.
I couldn't fall asleep and my thoughts went wild. Will the situation repeat itself in the US? I started to feel lucky that two parties took turns to be in power and Obama won at the critical juncture.
我剛進MIT時,因為英語差要上英語補習課。第一堂課老師就叫每個學生寫一篇作文,題目是“My most emotional experience”。我就寫了這一段去喀什的經曆。下麵是老師寫的評語:
A fascinating story! I think we Americans are just beginning to understand what happened during the Caltural Revolution. There is one very good English book called "A death is Shanghai" by Nien Cheng, whose story was also frightening and terrible, but ended in happiness. Those of us who have lived in constant comfort can perhaps never understand fully.
