轉瞬即逝的音符
所有偉大的詩歌都是在永恒的白色光芒下繪製出的一副多彩圖畫。當背景缺失時，詩歌也許與文學有關，但並不構成文學。
中國最好的詩歌都有一種對生命轉瞬即逝的敏銳認識。在大多數情況下，這種認識含而不露，但卻是無處不在的弦外之音。然而在不少情況下，轉瞬即逝的音符作為歌曲的中心主旨突顯出來。我們來聽聽這首“蜉蝣”是如何唱的吧：
They are but the wings of an ephemera,
These gorgeous robes of mine.
Oh the burden of my soul!
I wonder where I shall return.
They are but the wings of an ephemera,
These shining clothes of mine.

“蜉蝣”原文：
蜉蝣之羽，衣裳楚楚。心之憂矣，於我歸處。

這首歌很有可能是由一個在社會上地位爬得很高的人所創作，他發現甚至偉人也會有一天以某種方式離開這個世界。很顯然這是一位老人，兒孫滿堂，所以他想象出一個由白色麻衣組成的送葬隊伍，像雪花一樣白，像雪片一樣不計其數。
請聽另一首歌，這是對一個不會享受生活的守財奴的忠告。看起來漢學家理雅格（James Legge）把這首詩翻譯得相當好，所以我在此冒昧地使用他的譯文：
The thorny elms on the mountains grow,
And the white elms rise where the grounds are low.
You have suits of robes which you never wear;
You have steeds and cars you are fain to spare.
And these another will have by and by,
For the time will come when you shall die.
The k'ao trees thrive on the mountain's brow,
