EXT. IPATIEV HOUSE -- NIGHT
The Fiat drives past the square, turns through the open gates of the palisade, and pulls up before the sloped courtyard.
The chauffeur gets out, leans against the truck and smokes, waiting for further instructions.
INT. COMMANDANT'S OFFICE -- IPATIEV HOUSE -- NIGHT
The rumbling of a truck can be heard.
Yurovsky and his men approach the collection of pistols and revolvers piled on the desk.
Yurovsky arms himself with a Mauser and an American Colt. Nikulin takes a Browning. Each member of the murder squad picks his selected weapon. Ermakov is weighted down with two Russian Nagants, a Mauser and a Smith & Wesson, his belt sagged.
YUROVSKY
Now, each of us assigned to a particular victim, it'd proceed in an orderly manner. So, are your positions clear?
Ermakov, inebriated and arrogant, staggers and hammers his heavily armed body with his fists.
ERMAKOV
I'd take two victims, the Empress and Dr. Botkin.
Some members of the murder squad shiver and sweat, their trembling hands griping the guns tightly.
INT. MURDER ROOM -- NIGHT
Grim-looking Nikulin enters and looks around, followed by six or seven members of the murder squad, guns in hands. Nikulin rattles the double doors to the storeroom to ensure that they are locked.
INT. VICTOR'S CELL -- CITY JAIL -- EKATERINBURG -- NIGHT
Victor lies on a tattered straw mattress, falling asleep. Sasha unlocks the iron door and pats Victor on the shoulder to wake him up.
SASHA
Victor, wake up, wake up.
VICTOR
Sasha, what happened?
SASHA
I've just got the news that the imperial family shall be get rid of.
VICTOR
When?
SASHA
Tonight.
VICTOR
Tonight? Oh, my God. I need to go. Help me get out of here, Sasha, help me.
SASHA
I'm now in charge of collecting trash for the jail. Just hide in the trash bin. I'll push the bin with you inside to get you out of here.
VICTOR
What a good idea, buddy, thank you.
Victor jumps into the trash bin and crouches inside it. Sasha pulls the trash bin along the corridor, accosting the guards posted on duty and whistling all the way out.
EXT. CITY JAIL -- NIGHT
Sasha helps Victor step out of the trash bin and conceals him in a trash cart. Sasha drives the trash cart along the road toward Ipatiev House.
INT. BEDROOM -- IPATIEV HOUSE -- NIGHT
The Romanovs put on their clothes. A shirt wrapped with jewels is put on Alexei beneath his tunic. Anna sews small metal boxes containing jewelry into some white pillows. The prisoners leave in silence, not alarmed.
INT. STAIR HALL -- NIGHT
Nicholas, seeming calm, carries Alexei in his arms. Both of them are dressed in field shirts and khaki tunics, with military caps on their heads.
Alexandra leans on her cane, her grey hair disheveled and her skirts rustling. Olga looks arrogant, all skin and bones. Tatiana, Marie and Anastasia appear cheerful as usual. All the four duchesses wear white blouses and dark skirts.
The Romanovs are followed by Dr. Botkin, the footman Trupp, the chef Kharitonov and the maid Anna who still holds her master's white pillows and purses.
Yurovsky leads the eleven prisoners across the main floor and down the staircase. On their way downstairs, the prisoners cross themselves as they pass a stuffed female bear with two cubs on the landing.
Reaching the bottom, Nicholas turns to his family and nods.
NICHOLAS
Well, we're going to get out of this place.
EXT. COURTYARD -- NIGHT
Yurovsky leads the prisoners out of the double doors at the bottom of the staircase and into the courtyard. He opens a second set of double doors and gestures the prisoners into the ground floor.
INT. GROUND FLOOR -- NIGHT
Following Yurovsky, the prisoners walk down a short flight of steps, through a series of hallways and guardrooms, toward the murder room.
INT. MURDER ROOM -- NIGHT
The double doors are opened. Yurovsky enters, motioning the prisoners inside.
The room is empty and dim, lighted by a single bulb.
ALEXANDRA
Why is there no chair here? Is it forbidden to sit down?
YUROVSKY
(ordering his guard)
Bring in two chairs.
Two CHAIRS are brought in. Alexandra sits in one chair next to the arched window. Nicholas gently sets Alexei in the other chair in the middle of the room, and then stands directly in front to shield his son.
Trupp and Kharitonov lean against the northern wall. Dr. Botkin stands behind Alexei. Anna goes to the southeastern corner, standing against the locked store-room doors. Tatiana stands directly behind her mother. Anastasia stands beside her mother. Olga and Marie leans against the wall of the storeroom.
Yurovsky takes a glimpse back over his shoulder before closing the doors and exiting the room. The prisoners look calm and unsuspicious.
EXT. COURTYARD -- NIGHT
The chauffeur smokes, pacing back and forth while Yurovsky checks on the truck.
YUROVSKY
Gun the engine, to muffle the sound of shots.
The chauffeur hops into the driver's seat and starts the engine. It RUMBLES loudly. Yurovsky gestures okay and leaves.
INT. CORRIDOR -- GROUND FLOOR -- NIGHT
Yurovsky collects the members of the execution squad in the corridor before the double doors of the murder room. Altogether there are ten executioners.
The roar of the Fiat's engine rattles the glass in the window frames and the clock hung on the wall.
Yurovsky looks at the CLOCK. It's two fifteen A.M.
INT. MURDER ROOM -- NIGHT
The double doors are opened. Yurovsky steps in, followed by the members of the squad. The prisoners turn their heads to face these men.
Nikulin moves in to Yurovsky's left, standing directly in front of Alexei, who, sick and waxy, stares out with his wide curious eyes at the men. Ermakov stands opposite Alexandra. The other members of the squad stand in the doorway.
YUROVSKY
(to Alexandra)
Stand up.
With a flash of anger in her eyes, Alexandra pulls herself erect.
Taking out a crumpled paper from his pocket and clutching it tightly in his hand, Yurovsky faces Nicholas and clears his throat.
YUROVSKY (CONT'D)
(reading)
In view of the fact that your relatives continue their offensive against Soviet Russia, the Presidium of the Ural Regional Soviet has decided to sentence you to death.
NICHOLAS
(stuttering)
Lord, oh, my God. Oh, my God. What is this?
As Nicholas turns to face his family, a cry arises.
DR. BOTKIN
So, we're not going to be taken anywhere?
NICHOLAS
I can't understand you. Read it again, please.
YUROVSKY
(irritated and reading again)
In view of the fact that your relatives continue their offensive against Soviet Russia, the Presidium of the Ural Regional Soviet has decided to sentence you to death.
Alexandra and Olga begin to cross themselves. Nicholas seems frozen.
NICHOLAS
What? What?
YUROVSKY
This.
Yurovsky's finger catches the trigger. The first bullet smashes into Nicholas' chest. Nicholas reels and his khaki tunic explodes in blood, as all the ten men aim directly at him and fire.
