EXT. HARBOUR -- HONGKOW -- 1948 -- DAY
Hans and Anna, followed by Mark, Emilia and Petr, jostle their way through the massive exodus of Jewish refugees to board the AMERICAN VESSEL anchored in the Harbour.
Anna appears pregnant in a wide flared overcoat, carrying a valise in one hand and shielding her swollen belly with her handbag in the other. Hans carries a heavy bundle on his shoulder and a suitcase in his hand, his face sweat-drenched. Mark and Emilia, both senile, shamble propping on sticks and lag behind gasping for breath. Petr shuffles reluctantly beside Anna.
HANS
Anna, Anna, be careful. Petr, Petr, follow me closely.
ANNA
Mama, Papa, this way, this way. Petr, Petr, catch up with me, don't get lost.
PETR
Auntie Anna, I don't want to go. Let me stay here. I don't want to go.
ANNA
Don't be silly, Petr. Be a good boy. Come on, let's go, go.
HANS
Anna, Anna, where are Papa and Mama? I don't see them.
ANNA
They may lag behind. Shall we wait for them?
HANS
No, no, you go ahead, you and Petr go ahead. Let me look for Papa and Mama. I can wait and find them.
Hans thrusts his way backward through the crowd to look about for Mark and Emilia, while Anna goes ahead with Petr, pushed by the flow of passengers swarming toward the ship.
HANS (CONT'D)
(shouting)
Mama, Papa, Mama, Papa...
EXT. DECK -- AMERICAN STEAMSHIP -- DAY
Anna and Petr go on board the ship and inch their way forward among the other passengers. The passengers, carrying their heavy luggage, trudge through long corridors lined with doors of cabins.
PETR
Auntie Anna, I really don't want to go. I can't go.
ANNA
Why? Why can't you go?
PETR
I can't go because I can't leave my Mama behind, I can't.
ANNA
What are you talking about, Petr? Your Mama died a few years ago.
PETR
No. She is still here, in this place. She'll be back, and, and look for me, and, and if I left, she could hardly find me...
ANNA
Petr, she's gone. It's true she's buries here, but it doesn't mean she'll be back to look for you.
PETR
Whatever, I won't leave. I feel too sad to leave.
ANNA
Listen, Petr, your Mama wanted you to be happy and, and I promised her to make you happy.
PETR
You promised Mama to make me happy?
ANNA
Yes, I did.
PETR
Thank you, Auntie Anna.
ANNA
Well, it's our cabin. Go on in, hurry up.
INT. CABIN -- AMERICAN STEAMSHIP -- DAY
The passengers hustle to take care of their luggage. Anna sets down her valise and handbag and looks round for Hans and her parents.
ANNA
Petr, I'm gonna find your Uncle Hans. You just stay here, don't go around, okay?
PETR
Okay.
As soon as Anna leaves, Petr peeks out through a porthole the HUBBUB on the dock and then rushes out of the cabin.
EXT. DECK -- AMERICAN STEAMSHIP -- DAY
While scooting away, Petr takes off his overcoat and throws it on the deck. Staying in concealment near the stern, Petr peers furtively at Anna and Hans who hasten to support Mark and Emilia toward the cabin.
