詞匯學習(2): 這是 Dole 還是 Dole?

   是不是有點廢話，這兩詞不是一樣嘛! Well, 往下看。 

    讀報紙時看到doleful這詞，記得它的意思是“悲傷，不高興”之類 (doleful = cheerless, sad, sorrowful, or grievous)， 是形容詞。它的名詞是 dole = grief, sorrow。這詞和它的用法都不難，比如一個人不高興時會流露出一張 doleful face (a person would show a doleful face when he/she is unhappy). 我們可將帶有巨大痛苦的損失叫做doleful loss (If someone suffers a sizable and painful loss, we can call it doleful loss). 悲哀的音樂曲調也可稱做 doleful melody (When a musical piece expresses a lamenting melody, we can call it a doleful melody).  

     在前麵的詞匯學習中，我們見過前綴con- = together. 現在將con- 和 dole 放一塊， 聯成condole. 各位大概都知道condole對吧，就是“安慰”還有“吊喪”的意思。用中文說不吉利， 我們就用英語講: When a family suffers a grand loss (such as decease/death of a member), we go and condole the family. So condole literally means that people express grief together and figuratively means that we go and give sympathetic sorrow。condole的名詞是condolence。People will give condolence to a family that suffers such a loss. 

     有人可能會問，不是有那句常用英語 "Hay, where is my dole?" 意思是問，“我該得的那份在哪兒?” 在此，dole = one's allotted share or portion (該得的那份). 這又是怎麽回事? 

    其實，從辭源上看， 此dole非同彼 dole。第一個dole是土生土長的英文，根生於古英文中。而第二個dole是外來語， 根係拉丁。換言之，這兩個"dole"是毫不相幹的兩個詞。 

     至此有人或要感歎: Damn English, why do you have to be that hard?  

     難在哪兒? 難就難在詞匯。英文屬 Anglo-Saxon 語係， 但在不同曆史時期， 英文屢屢遭受拉丁語種的蹂躪，結果就是被雜交了的英語詞匯，也就成了我們今天學習英文最大的難題。從詞匯上講，學一門英文要相當於學兩門別的語種，這一點都不誇張。
