第二天上午10點鍾，塵香和塵凡匆忙地回到了女媧的故鄉，法庫縣。政府辦公廳的大堂裏擠滿了人，都不認識主事的官員。這哥倆排在了詢問的隊伍的後麵，想問問怎麽全縣的三十幾位官員全換成了新人？一位政府的官員在一次出來解釋：“這是新政策，各縣政府的官員輪流互換，以提高公務員的辦事能力。請各位放心，一切公務的辦理會在一兩天內恢複正常。”
這時，縣尉帶著幾個捕快進了大堂，說是剛才看見兩個1.8米多高的強壯年青人進了縣政府大院，他要找那倆人聊聊。塵香和塵凡聽見後就走過去了。
縣尉對這兄弟倆說：“下個月武漢有將軍入學考試。如果你倆有興趣參加，可以到後院看看，做幾項素質測試。”
途中，這倆兄弟得知，縣尉是一位武術大師，是“南鶴北橋”的北橋： 橋峰。
At 10 o'clock the next morning, Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal hurried back to Nuwa's hometown, Faku County. The lobby of the government office was crowded with people, and none of them knew the officials in charge. The two brothers stood at the back of the line to ask why more than 30 officials in the county were replaced by new people? A government official came out to explain: "This is a new policy. Officials from county governments are rotated to improve the ability of civil servants to handle affairs. Please be assured that the conduct of all official business will return to normal in a day or two."
At this time, the county lieutenant entered the lobby with a few constables, saying that he had just seen two strong young men over 1.8 meters tall enter the county government compound, and that he wanted to talk to those two men. Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal heard this and went over.
The county lieutenant said to the brothers, "There is a general's entrance exam in Wuhan next month. If you two are interested in taking it, you can take a look in the backyard and do a few quality tests."
On the way, the two brothers learned that the lieutenant was a martial arts master, the North Bridge of the “South Crane North Bridge”: Bridge-Peak.
3.6.2.11-2
塵香和塵凡跟著橋峰來到了縣政府的校軍場，看見場地一邊放著兩排石鎖（如圖3.6.2.11-1，2，4）。橋峰指著圖1的石鎖說： “石鎖代表著裝 ‘天條’的手提箱（注即約櫃，佛教中稱作戒渡）。天條分為三類：18神佛不共法，女戒（即500威儀108000魅力），和男戒（即3000威儀84000細行，參見16.2節），分別由三棵斷頭樹（即棕櫚樹）表示，代表一切法。我們中華帝國的法庭，監獄，軍隊和警察都是法律的保護者，所以我們選將軍，就把舉石鎖作為第一項素質測試了。”
橋峰繼續說：“這些石鎖共兩個重量級別：女鎖重75公斤；男鎖125公斤。也就是說我們國家的男將軍必須能夠單臂舉起125公斤，還要能扔出去。女將軍必須能夠單臂舉起75公斤，然後扔出去，或者能夠用雙臂舉起125公斤，然後扔出去。現在我來用女鎖做示範，你們認真看啊！考試的時候，動作不合乎身體的力學原理，會扣分的。”
Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal followed Bridge-Peak to the county government's school military field and saw two rows of stone locks placed on one side of the field (as shown in Figures 3.6.2.11-1, 2, and 4). Pointing to the stone locks in Figure 1, Arrival-Bridge said: "The stone locks represent the suitcases that contain the ‘sky clauses’ (note, that Covenant Ark, also known as the Precepts Ferry in Buddhism). The ‘sky clauses’ are divided into three categories: 18 God Buddha Uncommon Laws, Woman Precepts (i.e., 500 Majesties 108,000 Charms), and Man Precepts (i.e., 3,000 Majesties 84,000 Enchantments, cf. section 16.2), each represented by three guillotine trees (i.e., palms), which stand for all laws. Our courts, prisons, army and police in Chinese Empire are all protectors of the law, that's why we choose our generals by lifting stone locks as the first test of quality.”
Bridge-Peak continued, "These stone locks consist of two weight classes: woman locks weigh 75 kilograms; man locks 125 kilograms. This means that the male generals of our country must be able to lift 125 kilograms with one arm and be able to throw it. Female generals must be able to lift 75 kilograms with one arm and throw it or be able to lift 125 kilograms with both arms and throw it. Now I'm going to demonstrate with the female lock, so watch carefully! When you take the test, points will be deducted for movements that don't follow the mechanics of the body."
塵香和塵凡都通過了舉石鎖，摔跤，和騎射的測試，然後是兵器演練。喬峰讓這哥兒倆自己選武器，然後對打給他和捕快們看。塵凡選了把青龍偃月刀。塵香選了一根棍子，掄起右端就向塵凡頭頂砸過去了。塵凡舉刀相迎。塵香收回棍子的右端，棍子的左端就被推出去直刺塵凡的胸口。
橋峰叫停了他們倆，問：“你們是不是沒學過使用武器？”
這哥倆尷尬地回答：“沒係統地學過。”
Both Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal passed the tests of lifting stone lock, wrestling, and mounted archery and then came the weapons drill. Bridge-Peak asked the two brothers to choose their own weapons and then fight against each other for him and the constables to see. Dust-Mortal chose a “Turquoise Dragon Crescent Blade”. Dust-Scent chose a stick and swung the right end of it towards Dust-Mortal's head. Dust-Mortal raised his sword to meet it. Dust-Scent retracted the right end of the stick, the left end of the stick was pushed out to stab Dust-Mortal's chest.
Bridge-Peak called them both to a halt and asked, “Is it true that you haven't learned to use weapons?”
The two brothers replied awkwardly, “Not systematically.”
3.6.2.11-3
橋峰回答：“沒關係！你們倆這素質，我教你們，拿到基本分數不成問題。隻要你們倆在考試中不缺項，就差不多。” 橋峰又對盧堂左說：“我有一套‘莊家十八棍’，又名‘金剛降魔杵’。所用的武器就是這隻棍子，長度約是13掌寬（如圖3）。前13式稱作 ‘達魔13式’是棍法的基本功。後五式是 ‘降龍伏虎式’，是佛門武功。你想學不？”
塵香回答：“你是怎麽知道佛門武功的？”
Bridge-Peak replied, "That's okay! With the quality you two have, it won't be a problem for me to teach you and get a basic score. As long as you two don't miss any items in the exam, it's pretty much the same." Bridge-Peak then said to Dust-Scent, "I have a set of ‘Boss’ Eighteen Sticks’, also known as the ‘Philosopher-Stone Taming-Demon Pestle’. The weapon used is this stick, which is about 13 palms wide in length (Figure 3). The first 13 stances are called the ‘13 Stances of Arriving Demon’ and are the basics of the stick. The last five stances are the ‘Dragon Subduing Tiger Stances’ and are Buddhist martial arts. Do you want to learn it?"
Dust-Scent replied: "How did you know about Buddhist martial arts?"
橋峰回答：“七年前，我剛來武漢的時候，去拜訪江南鶴。他就拉我去他的妹妹女英家做客。女英就把舜帝和禹皇請到她家吃飯了。隨後，江南鶴，禹皇，和我們幾個人就談論起了功夫。禹皇說，他小時候，梁山伯（即伏羲，燃燈佛）教過他兩套強身健體的功夫。後來他發現這兩套功夫是共工一脈傳承的密宗功夫。他就委托我給琢磨琢磨，幫他把這兩套功夫傳下去。我研究後認為這兩套功夫都很好。這18式的後5式是逆手棍，是奇門。18式雖然少，但可以正合，以奇勝；以奇合，以正勝。這樣奇正配合使用，這套棍法是很好的武學入門功夫。”
塵香回答：“好！我學。”
Bridge-Peak replied: "Seven years ago, when I just came to Wuhan, I went to visit Jiang Nanhe (i.e., Crane of the Yangzi River South). He took me to visit his sister Heroin's house. Heroin invited Emperor Shun and Emperor Yu to her house for dinner. Then, Crane of the Yangzi River South, White-King Yu, and a few of us talked about kung fu (i.e., Martial Art). White-King Yu said that when he was a child, Liang Shanbo (Fuxi, Lamplighter Buddha) taught him two sets of Martial Arts to strengthen his body. Later, he found that these two sets of Martial Arts are the Tantric kung fu inherited from the lineage of ‘Public Work’ (佛, Buddha, all-seeing all-knowing). He entrusted me to study them and help him pass on these two sets of Martial Arts. After studying them, I think both sets of Martial Arts are very good. The last 5 of these 18 moves are reverse hand sticks, which are Strange. Although 18 moves are few, you can use Correctness to face component, and by the Strange to win. Or you can fight like a Buddha by Strange to face component and win by Correctness. Using these combinations of Strange and Correctness, this set of stick techniques is a good introduction to martial arts."
Dust-Scent replied, "Good! I'll learn."
橋峰對塵凡說：“我還從禹皇那裏學來一套‘屠龍刀法’。這長刀（如圖5）名作‘屠龍刀雙手帶’，可以分解成兩部分。分解後的刀把就成為了‘金剛降魔杵’；而這刀頭就成為了刺客所用的‘屠龍刀’。和我剛才解釋金剛杵的招式類似，屠龍刀共有36式；後18式是上乘的武功。後18式的前9式是正奇刀法；後9式是逆奇。所謂遇神殺神，遇鬼殺鬼，屠龍刀過處，天地驚，鬼神泣，血流成河。你願意學不？”
塵香回答：“願意學！”
橋峰回答：“好！那你們倆去登記參加將軍資格考試，我就教你們。”
Bridge-Peak said to Dust-Mortal: "I also learned a set of 'Dragon Slaying Sword Techniques' from White-King Yu. This long sword (as shown in Figure 5) is called 'Dragon Slaying Sword Two-hand Carrying' and can be decomposed into two parts. The decomposed hilt becomes the 'Philosopher-Stone Pestle'; and the blade becomes the 'Dragon Slaying Sword' used by assassins. Like the moves of the 'Philosopher-Stone Pestle' I just explained, there are 36 moves of the Dragon Slaying Sword; the last 18 moves are advanced martial arts. The first 9 of the last 18 moves are Correct-Strange sword techniques; the last 9 moves are Anti-Stranges. It is said that when you meet a god, you kill the god; when you meet a ghost, you kill the ghost. Wherever the Dragon Slaying Sword passes, sky and earth are shocked, ghosts and gods are weeping, and blood flows like a river. Are you willing to learn?"
Dust-Scent replied: "I am willing to learn!"
Bridge-Peak replied: "Okay! Then you two go register for the general qualification exam, and I will teach you."
3.6.2.11-4
在去往報名登記處的途中，塵香問身邊的人，江南鶴是誰？一位考生告訴他，江南鶴是一位苗族祖廟‘百花穀’的護法，以‘鐵膽水上漂’，又名‘八步趕禪’，和‘朱砂掌’而著稱於世。
塵香又問：“我聽說江南有很多穀，這百花穀很出名嗎？”有考生告訴他：“百花穀盛產多種名貴的草藥。現在我們國家有30多位將軍是苗族人。他們每一位將軍選擇一味草藥的名字來命名他自己的出處。例如有將軍來自 ‘絕情穀’，這名字就源於百花穀盛產 ‘斷腸草’。又將軍來自 ‘情花穀’，名字就源於百花穀盛產 ‘情花’。實際上，江南的將軍有三分之一來自 ‘百花穀’。”
在這哥倆登記的時候，橋峰看見盧堂左（即塵香）和盧堂右（塵凡）是兩個親兄弟，就說：“我登記你們倆用一個名額，寫兩人的名字。這樣考官就會注意到你們倆是親兄弟，會給你倆每人加三分。他們願意讓親兄弟一起去打仗。這次我們的女媧故鄉縣參加將軍入學考試的口號是：錄取的人數比報考的人數多！”
On the way to the registration office, Dust-Scent asked the people around him, who is the “Crane of the Yangzi River South”? A candidate told him that He is the guardian of the Miao ancestral temple "Hundred Flowers Valley” and is famous for "Iron Gallbladder Floating on Water", aka. "Eight Steps to Chasing Chan", and "Cinnabar Palm".
Dust-Scent asked again: "I heard that there are many valleys south of Yangzi River, is this ‘Hundred Flowers Valley’ very famous?" A candidate told him: " Hundred Flowers Valley is rich in many kinds of precious herbs. Now there are more than 30 generals in our country who are Miao people. Each of them chooses the name of an herb to name his own origin. For example, there is a general from the "Feelingless Valley", and this name comes from the fact that Hundred Flowers Valley is rich in "Heartbroken Grass". Another general comes from the "Love Flower Valley", and that name comes from the fact that Hundred Flowers Valley is rich in "Love Flower". In fact, one third of the generals south of Yangzi River are from the "Hundred Flowers Valley."
When the two brothers were registering, Dust-Scent saw that Hall-Left Lu (i.e. Dust-Scent) and Hall-Right Lu (i.e. Dust-Mortal) were brothers, so he said, "I will register both of you with one place and write both of your names. This way the examiner will notice that you two are brothers and will give you three extra points each. They are willing to let brothers go to war together. This time, the slogan of our Nuwa hometown county participating in the general entrance examination is ‘more people are admitted than the number of applicants!’"
塵香驚訝地叨咕：“我沒想到咱們法庫縣有這麽多武術世家！？”
橋峰喝了一口他的狗葫蘆裏的酒，然後回答：“這些考生多數來自別的縣市，他們來咱這裏報名是為了學習女媧家的武功。”
當橋峰教盧堂左和盧堂右功夫的時候，他還在教其它的考生“降龍18掌”。考生們認為那套女英創造的功夫有助於他們將來和“天蓬元帥”女英搞好關係。但是這哥兒倆對“降龍18掌”不感興趣，就回家去看將軍們演練女英的武功，琢磨如何在打鬥中反製女英。
Dust-Scent muttered in surprise: "I didn't expect that there are so many martial arts families in our Faku County!?"
Bridge-Peak took a sip of the wine in his dog-gourd and replied: "Most of these candidates are from other counties and cities. They come here to register to learn the martial arts of the Nuwa family."
While Bridge-Peak was teaching Hall-Left Lu and Hall-Right Lu, he was also teaching the other candidates the "Taming Dragon 18 Palms". The candidates thought that the kung fu created by Heroine would help them to get along well with Heroine, the "Celestial Ceiling Marshal". However, the two brothers were not interested in the "Taming Dragon 18 Palms", so they went home to watch the generals practice Heroine's martial arts and figure out how to counter Heroine in a fight.
3.6.2.11-5
這時，大虎山鄉已經來了很多人了。塵香和塵凡開始轉移財產，把錢存放到了大虎山鄉的金庫裏，並且詢問秀才和跤手的來曆細節。
秀才和跤手看出了盧堂左的疑惑，說：“我們倆也曾懷疑，怎麽來盧家屯的人的素質都高？就研究了一下，我倆發現來的人講的故事都有些類似。原因是，我們來這裏就直接得到了房子和地。若這房子和地隨意地給出去，那大虎山鄉就成為丐幫的大本營了。所以政府在開放這裏的兩年前，就秘密地放出了這個地區白給房子和地的消息，而且每個縣是有名額限製的，隻能選送有用的人才。然後，他們秘密地觀察著遷移來的人口，趕走低素質的人，隻留下高素質的人。這樣，大虎山才能發展成為一個能為國家做貢獻的地區。”
By this time, a lot of people had come to Big-Tiger Mountain Township. Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal began to transfer their property, depositing the money in the vault of Big-Tiger Mountain Township, and questioned Scholar and Wrestler about the details of their origins.
Scholar and Wrestler saw Hall-Left Lu's doubt and said, "We both also wondered how come the quality of the people who came to Lu Family Village are high? Just after researching a bit, we both realized that the stories told by the people who came were somewhat similar. The reason is that we got the house and land directly by coming here. If this house and land were given out freely, then Big-Tiger Mountain Township would be the home base of the Beggar Gang. So, two years before the government opened this place, they secretly released the news that this area is given houses and land for free, and that there is a quota limit for each county, so that only useful people can be selected. Then, they secretly watched the migrating population, driving out the low-quality people and leaving only the high-quality ones. In this way, Big-Tiger Mountain can develop into a region that can contribute to the country."
