老子《道德經》第十六章“致虛極，守靜篤”－－我所看到的一段精彩英文翻譯

老子《道德經》被稱為中國人的聖經，可惜太難懂。我們文革中長大的人，更難與它有緣。說來有趣的是我第一次讀到《道德經》的片段是在美國，且是英文，整個一個出口轉內銷。那是我在美東上學的時候，我們實驗室的門上貼著下麵這首像是詩一樣的英文，讀了以後覺得很有哲理，下麵落款作者是Lao Tzu, 我當時並沒有意識到是老子，這可能是老式的漢語拚音。後來有個美國學生讀後還很興奮問是不是我把它貼到門上的。到底是美國人還是中國人把它貼到門上的看來很難搞清了，但喜歡這段文字的人似乎不受種族的限製。後來我知道它是老子《道德經》第十六章“致虛極，守靜篤”英譯，也看到近來網上的老子《道德經》英譯本對這一段的翻譯，但和下麵的這段翻譯相比則顯的無多少神韻。

 

The ten thousand things come into being,         
萬物並作，

 

And I have watched them return.            
吾以觀複。

 

No matter how luxuriantly they flourish,        
夫物芸芸，

 

Each must go back to the root from which it came.    
各複歸其根。

 

This returning to the root is called quietness,       
歸根曰靜，

 

It is the fulfilment of one's destiny.           
靜曰複命。

 

That each must fulfil his destiny is the eternal pattern,    
複命曰常，

 

To know the eternal pattern is to be illuminated.       
知常曰明。

 

He who knows it will not be withered by misfortune.    
不知常，妄作，凶。

 

He who knows the eternal pattern is all-encompassing,    
知常容，

 

He who is all-encompassing is completely impartial,    
容乃公，

 

Being impartial, he is kingly，   
公乃王，

 

Being kingly, he is like heaven，   
王乃天，

 

Being like heaven, he is at one with Tao，   
天乃道，

 

Being at one with Tao he is, like it, imperishable，   
道乃久，

 

Though his body may disappear into the ocean of existence,    

He is beyond all harm.
沒身不殆。
