Chapter 9 The first fight against White Bone Demon
1.
While walking, they saw a high mountain right ahead.
“Look!” Tang Monk said. “There is a precipitous mountain in front of
us. I’m afraid our horse cannot climb the perilous ridge. We must be
careful.”
“Master, don’t worry about it.” Monkey King said. “We can manage.”
Walking in front of the horse, Monkey King cleared the way and then
stepped onto a high cliff. Tang Monk was in constant dread all the way.
Waving his Golden Cudgel and roaring aloud, Monkey King carried out his
magic which made wolves, tigers, bears, snakes and all other terrible
beasts running away wildly. Before long, the master and his three disciples
entered the big mountain and came to a cliffy place.
“Wu Kong,” Tang Monk said to Monkey King. “I’m very hungry. Would you
please go and look for something to eat?”
“Master, you must be bewildered.” said Monkey King. “We’re now in a
wild mountain. We can touch neither a village in front nor a town behind.
Even if we have money, we cannot buy anything here. Where do you ask me to
go and look for something to eat?”
“You wild monkey!” Tang Monk was very unhappy and scolded Monkey King. “
Do you still remember the difficult time when you were in the stone box
under the big mountain? At that time, you could neither speak nor walk. It’
s me that rescued you and took you as my disciple. How can you become so
lazy today?”
“Master,” Monkey King said. “I’m not lazy.”
“Now that you’re not lazy,” said Tang Monk, “why don’t you go and
look for something to eat? I’m so hungry, how can I go continuously? How
can we go west to take the Buddhist ures?”
“O.K.,” said Monkey King. “I know if I don’t go, you’ll be angry. And
if so, you’ll murmur Incantation of the Golden Hoop. Don’t blame on me.
Please get off the horse and sit here. I’ll go immediately.”
Jumping into the sky and standing on the clouds, Monkey King looked
downward. He couldn’t find any villages except for cliffs and trees. After
looking for a long time, he saw a tract of red trees in the southern
hillside of a high mountain. He came back immediately.
“Master,” Monkey King said to Tang Monk. “We have something to eat.”
“What did you find?” asked the master.
“There’re no villages.” said Monkey King. “We cannot find any meals
for you to eat. But there’s a track of red trees over there. I think the
red thing must be ripe peaches. Let me pick some for you.”
“Great!” Tang Monk exclaimed happily. “As for our monks, it’s already
good enough to have some peaches to eat. Go quickly!”
Monkey King left at once.
2.
There is a saying goes: there must be monsters in high mountains; there
must be demons in precipitous ridges. There was really a demon in this
mountain. Coming and going, Monkey King’s action had already alerted him.
Stepping into the clouds and standing on the wind, the demon found Tang
Monk sitting alone on the ground.
“Good luck! Good luck!” the demon was delighted murmuring, “It’s said
that Tang Monk is not an ordinary man. So long as eating a piece of his
flesh, one can enjoy longevity. My good day is coming!”
Too impatient to wait, the demon was going to catch Tang Monk without any
delay. But then he was hesitated because he found the monk was safeguarded
by two bodyguards, namely Pig Bajie and Sha Monk.
“Let me tease them first,” the demon said to himself.
Coming down onto the ground, the demon transformed into a beautiful girl
with a black pottery jar in her right hand and a green porcelain bow in her
left hand.
Tang Monk found the girl before long.
“Baijie, Sha Monk,” Tang Monk called his two disciples. “Just have a
look! There comes a young girl! Why did Wu Kong say he could find no one
here?”
“Master,” said Pig Bajie to Tang Monk. “You just sit here with Sha
Monk. Let me go and have a look.”
Putting down his rake and pretending to be refined in manner, Bajie
stepped up. Finding that the girl was extremely pretty, he became
infatuated with her at once.
“Where are you going?” he asked. “What in your hands?”
She was precisely a demon, but Bajie couldn’t distinguish at all.
“Master,” said the girl. “There’s some rice in my black pottery jar,
and it’s fried gluten in my green bow. I come here only for the purpose of
contributing meals to monks.”
Hearing this, Bajie was very happy and went back to tell his master about
it.
“Master!” said Bajie. “I know you’re very hungry now. You sent my
brother Wu Kong to ask for alms. Maybe he is eating too many peaches and
has loose bowels.” Bajie said continuously. “But the blessed is certainly
supported by God of Heaven. Look, master, there comes the one to contribute
meals.”
“It’s nonsense!” Tang Monk didn’t believe. “We’ve walked so long a
time but we haven’t met any good men, let alone a man to contribute meals
to us.”
“Look, Master!” said Bajie. “There she comes.”
3.
Seeing the girl coming over, Tang Monk stood up and made her a bow with
hands folded in front.
“Where do you come from? What sort of family are you from? With what sort
of wishes do you want to contribute meals to monks?” Tang Monk asked a
series of questions.
Precisely facing a demon, but just like Pig Bajie, Tang Monk couldn’t
distinguish. The monk asking her antecedents, the girl told him a lie with
sweet words.
“Master,” said the girl. “This mountain is named White Tiger Ridge.
Seeing this mountain, even snakes turn back and beasts run away because it
’s too steep. My home is located at the western foot of the hill. My
parents always stay at home and chant ures. They’re happy to help
monks. In the beginning, they had no children. Later on, they gave their
prayers frequently. At last they gave birth to me.” The girl said
continuously. “They were going to marry me off at first. But then they
changed their mind and wanted to take in a son-in-law to bear my family
name so as to have a strong young man to provide for them.”
“Respected alms giver,” said Tang Monk. “Now that there’s a young man
in your family, why are you coming into this wild mountain alone without
anyone to accompany you?”
“Master,” beaming with joy, the girl said. “My husband is working in
the northern farmland with some other people. The food in my jar and bow is
their lunch. My parents are too old and too weak to come here, so they ask
me to wait upon them with the lunch.” Added the girl. “I guess that you
must come all the way from a distant place. My parents are happy to help
others and often encourage me to follow their example. If you don’t detest
and avoid, I’m willing to attend upon you with my lunch as a donation.”
“You’re so kind,” said Tang Monk. “But it’s unnecessary for me to
accept you alms because my disciple has already gone to take me some
peaches. He’ll come back very soon. Moreover, I don’t dare to eat your
food. I’m afraid your husband will blame you if he learns you gave their
lunch to me. And if so, isn’t it my fault?”
Seeing Tang Monk didn’t accept her food, the girl smiled.
“Never mind,” she said. “Maybe you don’t know that my husband
is also a good man. He is happy to do good things such as building bridges,
paying roads, respecting the aged, having pity on the poor and so on. If he
hears I donated the lunch to you, he’ll be very happy.”
Seeing his master still refuses the lunch, Pig Bajie was quite unhappy.
“There’re numerous monks in the world.” Pouting his lips, Bajie
stealthily blamed his master. “But no one is so stupid as this one. He
should let a perfect lunch lie idle and waits for the monkey. If we have
the lunch now, there’re only three people to share it, but if the monkey
comes, there’re four people to share.”
Without waiting for his master’s permission, Pig Bajie overturned the jar
abruptly with his lips and wanted to eat immediately.
4.
Just at this moment, Monkey King came back from the southern mountains
with some peaches in hands. Having a somersault, he came down to the
ground. Wildly opening his magical eyes, he made out the White Bone Demon
in disguise at once.
Leaving no chance to explain, Monkey King fought the girl with his golden
cudgel. Scared to death, Tang Monk stepped up and stopped his disciple.
“Wu Kong!” Tang Monk scolded. “Why do you strike her?”
“Master!” Monkey King explained. “Don’t think she is a good girl. She’
s a demon. She is cheating you.”
“You wild monkey!” Tang Monk said. “You was really good at sizing up
people before. But why do you mess up today? It’s so kind of her to give
us something to eat. How can you say she’s a demon?”
“Master,” said Monkey King. “How can you recognize her? When I lived in
my Water-curtain-cave as a demon in the past, I did the same thing whenever
I wanted to eat human flesh. I would turn myself into anything needed such
as gold, silver, a village, a drunk man or a beautiful girl. Whenever I met
with someone infatuated with me, I would lure him into my cave and deal
with him at my will, steamed him or boiled him. After eating, I would
sun-bake the leftovers, if any, to provide against unexpected needs in
cloudy or rainy days,” added Monkey King. “Master, if I couldn’t come
back in time, you would have already been entrapped and suffered disaster.”
Without believing him, Tang Monk still said that she was a good girl.
“Master!” said Monkey King. “Now it dawned on me that her beautiful
appearance must have made you infatuated with her. If so, I’ll ask Bajie
to cut down several trees and ask Sha Monk to take some grass. And I can be
a carpenter. Then we’ll make a hut for you to marry her. After wedding, we
can break up partnership. That’s good for you. It’s unnecessary for you
to go west to take the Buddhist ures.”
As a soft-hearted man, Tang Monk felt Monkey King’s words too much for
him to endure. Flush with shame, the master had nothing to say. Just at
this moment, Monkey King fought the girl again in her face with his golden
cudgel.
As a demon of some real witch-crafts, the monster slunk off the dead body
like a cicada casting off its slough. This made Tang Monk scared to death.
“What a curse you are!” Tang Monk scolded. “You just don’t listen to
me. You’ve killed some many people without any reasons.”
“Master!” said Monkey King. “Don’t blame me and come to have a look.
What sort of things in the jar?”
Supported by Sha Monk, the master stepped up and looked at the jar. No
rice at all but instead many long-tail-maggots wriggling about. While in
the bow, instead of gluten, there were only some frogs and toads leaping on
the ground. In face of this, Tang Monk somewhat believed what Monkey King
said.
But Pig Bajie was very angry and complained.
“Master!” said Bajie. “This girl is a peasant woman. She came here to
give lunch to her husband and met with us on her way. How can we say that
she is a demon? I think my brother only wants to test his strength. But his
cudgel is too heavy and he fought her to death unexpectedly. I guess he
must be afraid that you’ll mutter the Incantation of the Golden Hoop so he
played a cover-up trick and changed the food into these sort of things so
as to cover your eyes and prevent you from muttering the incantation.”
Completely believing the gossip of Pig Bajie, Tang Monk indeed began to
mutter his incantation.
“Headache! Headache!” cried out Monkey King. “Don’t mutter
incantation! Don’t mutter incantation! Say what you want.”
“I want to say nothing,” said Tang Monk. “I only know that as a monk
you should always do good things for the convenience of others. While
sweeping the floor, you should be very careful lest any ants be killed.
While lighting a candle, you should be cautious lest any moths be burned to
death. Why do you manslaughter all the time? You even killed this innocent
girl! What’s the use even if we can take back the Buddhist ures? Go
back!”
“Go back to where?” asked Monkey King.
“I don’t need to have you as my disciple,” said the master.
“I’m afraid that you cannot reach your final destination if you don’t
have me as your disciple,” said Monkey.
“I’m willing to be resigned to my fate,” said Tang Monk. “If I should
be steamed and eaten by a demon, I’ll fold my hands and wait for death
without a single word of complain. Can you help me avert this disaster? I
don’t think you can. So you’d better go back.”
“O.K., Master,” Monkey King said to his master. “I can go back. But I’
m very sorry I haven’t repaid you for your kindness to me.”
“What sort of kindness?” asked Tang Monk.
“I’ll never forget, Master,” Kneeling and kowtowing, Monkey King said,
“In the past, I once made a hell of a fuss in the heavenly palace and
therefore incurred a disaster. The father of Buddha made me weighed down by
Mt. Liang Jie. Thanks to the help of Goddess of Mercy, I accepted the
Buddhist disciplines. And but for your help I should not have freed myself
from the predicament. If I don’t go to the western land together with you,
it seems like I don’t want to reciprocate your kindness. And If so, I’ll
leave an everlasting bad name.”
Being a kind hearted monk after all, Tang Monk could not bear Monkey King’
s imploration and changed his mind at last.
“In view of your sincere imploration, I’d like to forgive you,” said
Tang Monk. “But just for this time. You should not behave like this
anymore. Otherwise, I’ll mutter the incantation twenty times!”
“Even if thirty times. You can do whatever you like. It doesn’t matter,”
said Monkey King. “You can rest assured that I’ll never do violence to
anybody from now on.”
Monkey King hurriedly helped Tang Monk onto the horse back and gave his
master the peaches he picked from the wild mountains. Eating several
peaches, Tang Monk didn’t feel hungry anymore.
