他也是暢銷書《追尋我的治愈:一位醫生將希望化為行動的競賽》(Chasing My Cure: A Doctor’s Race to Turn Hope Into Action)的作者,該書已被《阿甘正傳》製片人溫迪·芬納曼改編成電影。

Celine Dion got her voice back thanks in part to a repurposed drug!
Diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, a rare disease that took away her ability to walk, talk, and sing, she has fought an inspiring battle.
Through intense physical therapy and the use of IVIg, a repurposed drug originally developed in 1952, she was able to regain some of her health.
This powerful example of using IVIg for stiff person syndrome is exactly why Every Cure exists—to uncover more uses like this and ensure that every patient can benefit from existing medicines.
Human Progress(edited) 1y
I would caution using the phrases, "...regain her health." AND "...she was able to make a remarkable recovery." IVIg is not a cure for SPS and would be reckless to give the impression it provided her with a cure. What IVIg enabled for her, and others suffering from SPS, is a lessening of symptoms and the potential slowing of progression and the strength to perform, not a cure. I appreciate the sentiment of the post but as a care giver of someone with SPS, who's taken his wife to IVIg infusions almost 60 times, IVIg is certainly a wonderful tool, in the arsenal to fight SPS and improve quality of life, but by no means a panacea.

David Fajgenbaum, MD, MBA, MSc I've recently joined a company that is doing remarkable things in Artificial General Intelligence in healthcare. I'd love to connect and show you and your team more. Particularly around how we can create a digital twin of patients—virtual models that simulate each patient's unique physiological, neurological, and immunological characteristics. These digital twins would allow your team to test various treatment scenarios in a virtual environment before applying them to the patient. Reach out to kevin@dv8.bz or connect in direct message. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this information. IVIg has kept me alive with Stiff Person Syndrome. It’s not as effective as it used to be, but it still helps with reducing spasms and pain.
Lauren McDermott
thanks so much for sharing about your experience. I’m so glad to hear that it’s helped you. Wish it was as effective now as it was before. Hopeful for future treatments.

As Lauren McDermott mentioned, many SPS patients have a similar experience where IVIG helps reduce symptoms but loses effectiveness over time. I also want to emphasize just because someone with SPS can perform at a high level for a brief period of time doesn’t mean they are better. The “before” and “after” the event can be brutal. I can speak to this from personal experience. We need a better treatment for SPS and maybe it is sitting on a shelf. That’s why I’m grateful for all of the work you are doing David Fajgenbaum, MD, MBA, MSc. Thank you!!
