相關當局指出，這名年紀51歲的嫌犯，衣服和身上攜帶的2把菜刀都有血跡，他已經被警方拘捕。美聯社報導，嫌犯和受害者的姓名都沒被公布。
民主黨籍的紐約市市長亞當斯（Eric Adams）說道，3位紐約民眾無緣無故遭攻擊。
亞當斯還提到，嫌犯顯然無家可歸，幾個月前曾在一起刑事案件中遭判刑，但沒有透露更多細節。
