Several Canadian airports experienced bomb threats on Thursday morning (July 3), leading to flight delays, evacuations, and ongoing investigations, according to NAV Canada and local officials.

“Early this morning, NAV CANADA was made aware of bomb threats affecting facilities in Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary and Vancouver. Employees at impacted locations are safe, and a temporary ground stop has been implemented at the affected airports,” said NAV Canada in a statement, as reported by Global News.

“We are collaborating with authorities to address the situation and ensure the safety of all personnel and passengers. Travellers are advised to check directly with their airline for the latest updates, as delays may occur,” a statement from NAV Canada said on X.

NAV Canada says flights have started to resume at some airports, but advised travellers across the country to still check for delays.

“Following the evacuation of a number of our sites and subsequent threat assessment by authorities, service is gradually resuming at affected sites...We thank airlines and passengers for their patience as we work towards normal operations,” the statement said.

Earlier in the morning, Reuters reported that security incidents were being investigated at Ottawa International Airport and Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport, potentially affecting operations.

“The Ottawa Airport is currently investigating a security incident. Operations may be disrupted; please check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport. We will continue to advise as the situation unfolds,” the airport wrote in a post on the social media platform X.

The airport authorities for Edmonton, Winnipeg, Calgary say the security incident had a minimal impact on their operations, reports say.

A spokesperson for Montréal–Trudeau International Airport reported that the NAV Canada control tower was evacuated, but flight operations have since resumed.

According to Reuters, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said ground stops were later lifted at the Montreal and Ottawa airports.

It appears that Canada’s largest airport, Toronto Pearson, was unaffected by the threats.

“Operations at Toronto Pearson continue to function without interruption,” said Erica Vella of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, in a statement to the Globe and Mail.
