Chapter 15

There were three rooms in the back of the two-storey Zhang’s house. Dai and her sons lived there. There were some trees around the rooms, such as apricot, mulberry and phoenix, which have much shade. And there were some stone benches there for relaxation. Zhang Yunxuan’s sitting-room was nearby, which was connected to some other sitting-rooms in the middle and front parts of the house.

Zhang’s sitting-room was carved with many patterns of flowers; inside the room were a rosewood table and eight fauteuils, and between fauteuils was a double-decked tea table with some china sets on it. The china sets were decorated with picturesque landscapes. Zhang Yan enjoyed staring at these china sets. There were some Chinese couplets stuck in the room. They looked yellowish, yet Zhang Yunxuan cherished them. Zhang Yan could not understand why his daddy loved these seemingly out-of-date couplets and china sets.

Zhang Yang got to the back of the courtyard, but could not find his cousins except two maidservants hanging clothes there. Then, he went into their rooms, and still nobody was seen. Zhang Yan entered his aunt’s room. The wooden window facing the garden was not opened. Zhang Yang stepped on the floor cautiously and heard his daddy and Uncle Yang talk in a low voice in the small sitting-room.

From under the desk with drawers beside Zhang Yan there came some noises. He bent down and his head met his aunt’s. A dim light could be seen from his daddy’s sitting-room. Wasn’t this a good place to detect what Daddy did? Zhang Yan wondered. And this was a good place for his cousins to play hide-and-seek. He was just about to call his aunt when Dai Min got out from under the desk, whispering, “Dear nephew, I was just playing hide-and-seek with you. And you caught me.”

Zhang Yan smiled. Dai dragged him to a chair where she sat and held the boy on her laps. She asked him, “Why do you come here so early? Are you looking for your cousins?”

Zhang Yan replied, “Mom said she would take me to Qianling Mountain today. I think it is fun to go with my cousins.”

Dai gave a loving pat on his back, saying, “Good boy! It’s kind of you to give favor to your cousins. You know your grandpa treated your uncle just in this way. Well, your cousins are reading in the garden. Just go there, please.”

Zhang Yan got off her laps and his cousins entered the room. The three boys were delighted with the visit to Qiangling Mountain. At this time Madame Wang came over, shouting in the distance, “Dai Min, the public security office workers ask you and your kids to come over!”

Dai Min got out of the room, looking at Madame Wang with a sense of displeasure and saying, “Why are you yelling in this disgusting way? Is there anything serious?”

Madame Wang was Zhang Yan’s nurse. She and Zhang Yan enjoyed a high position in the family. Finding Dai unhappy, Wang pulled a long face, replying, “Nothing serious. But the public security office workers come and I’m not sure whether you can stay here. Zhang Yan, let’s go.”

Dai was so scared as to fall to the ground. She leaned against the door but fell down again at the threshold. Madame Wang was sorry at the sight. She helped Dai to get up, saying:

“Take it easy. I think we can handle this well. It is related to the residential registration of you and your sons. If your sons’ residence is put in this house, then you’ll suffer less. Get up and let’s go.”

Dai looked at Madame Wang and apologized, “Sorry for my acts, dear sister. You know my husband was beaten dead and I was just scared at the arrivals of farmers’ association members, PLA soldiers, and public security office workers.”

Then, Zhang Yong hugged his mom, crying and pleading, “Mom, don’t go.”

Zhang Zhong was 12. He closed his mouth but his lips trembled fearfully. Zhang Yan felt like crying at the scene. Madame Wang hugged the little boy, blaming Zhang Yong, “Why are you crying, little coward?”

Dai wept. She hugged Zhang Yong, murmuring, “Dear Madame Wang, this kid has been too much frightened. They have experienced too many hardships before. Be calm, dear son! Calm down, dear son!”

Madame Wang said, “I think you had better meet the public security office workers. It’s up to you to decide whether to stay or leave.”

Dai calmed down, and wiped her tears. She put on a rough-looking dress and a pair of cloth shoes. Then, holding her sons in her arms, she followed Madame Wang to the front of the house.
