Chapter 13

Dai Min and her sons stayed in the Zhang’s house. As the new semester came, Tang Weiqi sent Dai’s sons to school. Yet, Dai was still worried. She and her sons could meet Zhang Yunxuan only at meals. They were timid before him. Although Zhang stayed at home, he spoke little to them. Sometimes Zhang would laugh a little and talk with her sons when he saw them play with his son, but he paid no attention to Dai. Maybe he considered her as a burden, she thought.

Dai was only 32. She had some secrets of love before she came to the Zhang’s. Now the secrets seemed to disappear little by little.

But she was not lonely, because her sons stayed with her. She cared more about them than about herself. She had no lover now, but she felt she lived a better life than she did in her village, where she would be frightened at any time. She was only 32, and she loved to be pretty-looking. That was the nature of woman.

There were a variety of shoes and clothes in Tang Weiqi’s wardrobe. The shoes were high-heeled, middle-heeled and flat-soled. Tang must have been a pretty girl when she was very young. Her clothes were made of a variety of materials, such as fur, silk and satin, and wool. Some were thin and smooth, and the others were colorful. Dai was amazed at the sight. Tang thought Dai had a good figure; Tang was thin and slender when she was young. Now she could not wear these clothes because she got fatter. And she did not wear them because she must go to church in a simple style.

That day, Tang found Dai touch the clothes with a sense of admiration. She looked up and made a cry, “Oh, Lord!”

Then, she asked Dai, “Do you like them?”

Dai replied, “I even have not seen such clothes before.

Tang went on, “You have a good figure, suitable for these clothes. If you like them, just choose any one you like. You can wear them without anyone’s permission.”

Dai was delighted at this, asking, “Dear sister-in-law, is that true?”

Tang answered, “I never tell a lie. These clothes belong to you from today on. I am pleased to find you like them.” Dai was excited. She tried on many of these clothes and shoes in the house and even in the streets.

Dai’s beauty and decorations attracted many people in the city. Once, Dai went back to her parents’ village in Huaxi, where she were much praised and respected. The villagers there did not think of her as a landlady that should be punished. Instead, they thought Dai should live a good living as a pretty woman.

The other women in her parents’ village were jealous, saying, “She is a model for us in marriage. We should marry rich men. Even if our rich husbands were punished, we could rely on our rich relatives. Wasn’t that so? Damn!” That day, Dai Min made her parents feel glorified. When Dai and her sons were walking on the streets of Huaxi, they heard a woman shout behind them, “Dai, and your little kids, wait for me! You are rich now. Are you turning a deaf ear to my greetings?”

Dai turned back. It was Madame Zhao. She was still dressed shabbily. Dai was thinking about whether to give Zhao some money or ask her about their village, when two patrolling PLA soldiers came up. Zhang Yong was scared, dragging his mom aside. Dai was worried that the soldiers would recognize her and take her back to the village. She dared not greet Zhao, but left in a hurry with her sons. They went back to Guiyang on a horse-wagon.

Zhao cursed Dai in the distance, “What a bitch! Why did you treat me like this? Let’s wait and see.”

Dai felt sorry for this for a few days. She thought she had been impolite to Madame Zhao. Zhao was annoyed with Dai’s manners. When she went back to the village, she met Li Qingshan and other village leaders who came to settle the account of her exploitations. The woman cursed Li Qingshan:

“Damn! You son of bitch only dare treat me in this bad way. Do you have the guts to look for Dai in the city? She is well dressed now, living in the house of a surrendered Kuomintang general. Damn!”

Li Qingshan was married a short time ago. Most of his attention was focused on his wife and house. He did not think much about Dai’s account of exploitations. And Zhao’s words did not remind him and the other people present of punishing Dai further.

One night, Li Qingshan was making love with his wife in a crazy way. His wife suddenly said, “Hey, husband, don’t overuse your energy! Zhang Yunchang was strong and lusty and raped Miss Pan, but he got exhausted. Are you stronger than him?”
