盡管《道德經》廣泛地被後世道教奉為經典，它與一般意義上的宗教經典卻有著基本的不同。宗教經典的一個最基本的共同特征是人與超自然之間的溝通，而《道德經》雖然有諸如“道生一，一生二，二生三，三生萬物”等探求物質世界在自身之外的根本起源或物質世界之外的存在對物質世界的影響的經句，使人容易聯想到是老子對超自然的感覺，但那隻是站在自然的領域內[閱讀全文]
