道德經上篇：《道經》
第十三章
【原文】
寵辱若驚①，貴大患若身。何謂寵辱若驚？寵為下，得之若驚，失之若驚，是謂寵辱若驚。何謂貴大患若身？吾所以有大患者②，為吾有身，及吾無身，吾有何患。故貴以身為天下，若可寄天下。愛以身為天下，若可托天下。

①若：作“乃”字或“則”字講。
②所以：可譯為“……的原因”。
【譯文】
得到寵愛或遭受恥辱，都像是受到驚嚇一樣。重視大患，就好像重視自己的身體一樣。什麽叫作“寵辱若驚”？寵愛是卑下的，得到它會感到心驚不安，失去它也會驚恐萬分。這就叫寵辱若驚。什麽叫作“貴大患若身”？我之所以會有禍患，是因為我有這個身體；倘若沒有了我的軀體，我還有什麽禍患呢？所以，把天下看得和自己的生命一樣寶貴的人，才可以把天下的重擔交付於他；愛天下和愛自己的生命一樣的人，才可以把天下的責任托付與他。
English Translation

Being either favored or humiliated is disturbing;
The greatest curse is to overvalue physical life.
What does it mean that either case is disturbing?
Favor comes from those above me.
It is a surprise to receive it;
It is a surprise to lose it.
What does it mean that the greatest trouble is to overvalue physical life?
I have great worries because I have a physical life.
If I discard my life,
What troubles do I have to worry about?
Therefore, he who gives up his life for the world is trusted by the world;
He who gives up his life for loving the world is relied on by the world.
