譯記：朋友談起狄蘭·托馬斯的《不要溫和地步入那永恒的黑夜》，讓我想到了這首“And Death Shall Have No Dominion”。與“Do not go gentle into that good night”一樣，這首名詩也有巫寧坤先生的著名中譯，即《死亡也一定不會戰勝》。
巫先生的譯本早己被大家接受、視為“定譯”。再去試譯這樣的詩作，要算是“多此一舉”的。隻是我對該詩的理解上與巫先生的譯本有兩處完全不同，還有一處不盡相同：
1. “And death shall have no dominion”
對於詩題，也是全詩反複吟詠的一行，我覺得譯成“死亡也一定不會戰勝”不盡準確。“戰勝”是結果。而“have no dominion”意味著較量仍在繼續。我試譯為“死亡也不會占得上風”。（這句話來自《聖經》羅馬書：“death hath no more dominion over him”。）
2. “Heads of the characters hammer through daisies / Break in the sun till the sun breaks down”
巫先生譯文為：“人物的頭角將…… 在太陽中碎裂直到太陽崩潰”。我的理解是：“人物的頭角會……擠進太陽直至太陽離析分崩”。換言之，巫先生理解是“Heads break……”。 我的理解是“Heads break in……” （就像“break in a pair of shoes”）。
3.“Where blew a flower may a flower no more / Lift its head to the blows of the rain”
巫先生譯文為：“一朵花開處也不會再有 / 一朵花迎著風雨招展”。我的理解是：“但願在一朵花被吹倒的地方 / 花兒不會再迎麵風雨的進攻”。
首先，我不同意巫先生把“blew”理解為“開放”。
其次，就是對”may a flower no more lift its head…”的理解。前麵講到，詩題來自《聖經》，即羅馬書6:9：“Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.” 這是在講耶穌既然已經死過，也就不會再受死亡的威脅。如果理解為“不會再有一朵花”會與《聖經》經文意思相同。然而，狄蘭·托馬斯是有名的無神論者，積極地遠離宗教。所以，我覺得這一理由未必成立。這首詩通篇在講對於死去的人發生了什麽，所以這兩行或許也是環境，而不是突然換成了比喻。還有要注意，這裏是“may… no more”而不是兩行之前的“no more may”。
此外，原詩第一節6-8行均已“Though”開頭，我覺得譯文中應該保留。
當時本來隻想改動這四處，一動筆卻沒能刹住。
這首詩中有若幹生動的意象：透過骷髏的星光、葬身海底、中世紀酷刑等等。第二節第六行，“他們手中的信仰會一折兩段”，引人注意。可以理解為逝者的精神甚至強於信仰。
這是首很適於朗誦的詩。
