very cool! I love it. I personally don't see anything wrong with it. We love our food, and we stick to our food when we are travelling.

From what i observed at different tour site, and at the airports, non-Chinese also like to eat and drink. they eat and drink often too.they drink coffee, soda, chips, water, beer, and eat pretzels, ice cream, sandwich, bagles, apples, taco, hot meals etc. The reason why you don't often see them eating as much as you see Chinese eating sitting on the chair taking out food from the bag, is because they buy and eat at the food court, at the restaurants, or in the coffee shop. they return to the wait area after the eating. i do see people (non-Chinese)eating at the gate, but more often, people go to food court to eat, where you can sit down and eat on the table and be more comfortable.
i think there are two reasons that Chinese like to eat any time and anywhere and also like to bring own food:
-like the traditional home cooked food or home prepared food better. used to the taste, such as dumpling, tea soaked eggs, pan cakes etc.
-try to save money. An apple at the airport could cost $1.00. a banana 0.50, but would cost very little to bring from home. so by eating the snacks brought from home, many Chinese avoid paying a hefty price to have a regular meal at the airport or at tour sites, where a hot meal could cost at least $7-8 and up, a hot meal could easily go up to $12-$15 a meal. that is why the per diem is so high, in many cities, for business travelers, because it cost a lot to eat and drink in those places.
as for historical reasons, (starving in the past etc), may or may not be the main reason. after all, it was over.
i am not commenting which style is better or worse, it is people's individual choices, as long as no law is broken, everything should be "politically correct". that is my take.
