已經五年了，“到了盡頭，”我說

’Tis five years since, „An end,” said I,

„I’ll march no further, time to die.

All’s lost; no worse has heaven to give.”

Worse it has given, and yet I live.

 

I shall not die today, no fear:

I shall live yet for many a year,

And see worse ills and worse again,

And die of age and not of pain.

 

When God would rear from earth aloof

The blue height of the hollow roof

He sought him pillars sure and strong

And ere he found them sought them long.

 

The stark steel splintered from the thrust,

The basalt mountain sprang to dust,

The blazing pier of diamond flawed

In shards of rainbow all abroad.

 

What found he that the heavens stand fast?

What pillar proven firm at last

Bears up so light that world-seen span?

The heart of man, the heart of man.

 

 

已經五年了，“到了盡頭，”我說，

“我不會繼續向前，已到去死的時光。

一切都輸了，老天不會讓我更加糟糕。”

更糟的還是來了，而我還活在世上。

 

我今天不會死，不用害怕，
我還有很多年可活得很長，
遭遇更糟的病痛，還有更糟的:
死於老年，而不是死於戰場。

當上帝想要離開地麵建立一個
高聳入雲蔚藍空幽的穹蒼，
他要找可靠而牢固的庭柱，
找了很多時候才如願以償。

堅硬的鋼鐵一擊就成為碎片，
花崗岩的大山能炸為塵土到處飛揚，
金剛鑽五彩繽紛的柱子
也會裂成彩虹的碎屑飛濺四方。

那麽他用什麽讓天堂穩固不晃?
最終是什麽柱子證實最為剛強
能把全世界都看得見的拱頂輕輕支撐?
那就是人的心髒，那就是人的心髒。

* 這首詩，是《詩歌外編》中的第 15 首。

        這是一首很難理解的詩歌。詩的頭兩節是寫一個人，好像是戰士。他五年前決 定不再“繼續向前”，因為“已到去死的時光”。但是，五年後，他發現他自己還活著。 五年前，他認為“老天不會讓我更加糟糕”，結果，他發現，在五年中，“更糟的還是來 了”，而且，以後還要經受“更糟的病痛”，“死於老年，而不是死在戰場。”原文說“不是 死於痛苦” (not of pain), 這裏的痛苦應該指死於非命的痛苦，對一個戰士來說，就是 死於戰場。所以，對詩人來說，活著並不是一件愉快的事，而是一種“更糟”的事情。

        詩的後三節用了《聖經》中上帝建造天堂的故事:

        “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.” (Psalms: 33:6- 9)

        “諸天靠祂的話而造， 群星靠祂口中的氣而成。祂將海水聚在一處，把汪洋收 進倉庫。願普世都敬畏耶和華! 願世人都尊崇祂! 因為祂一發話，就創造了天地; 祂 一命令，就立定了萬物。”(詩篇:33:6-9)

        詩中說，上帝建造天堂需要找最堅硬的材料，但是，他發現，鋼鐵、岩石和金 剛鑽都不合適，因為都會破碎。那麽，什麽才是最堅硬的材料可以“把全世界都看得見 的拱頂輕輕支撐”呢? 詩人說:“那就是人的心髒”!這裏，我覺得至少可以有兩種理解: 一種是:人活著要忍受無限的痛苦和災難，但是人都經受了下來，所以說，人的心髒 是最為堅強的東西。第二種理解是:人之所以能忍受各種痛苦還活下去，那是因為相 信死後有個上帝創造的“天堂”，但是，詩人是無神論者，他不相信真的天堂的存在， 因為沒有哪種堅固的材料能支撐那麽巨大的天堂，所以，他說，實際上“天堂”隻是存 在於人們的“心”上而已。要是你信，你的心裏就會有“天堂”。
