佳麗爭芳若霸王，老來無友缺忠良，
退朝常懼失皇位，背信更憂歸野荒。
病染殘枝人厭倦，香添初蓓蝶癲狂，
可憐花謝誰哀婉，月照秋林薄命亡。

 

Beauties, like tyrants, old and friendless grown,
Yet hate repose, and dread to be alone,
Worn out in public, weary ev'ry eye,
Nor leave one sigh behind them when they die.

 

亞歷山大·蒲伯（Alexander Pope,1688-1744），英國啟蒙時期的詩人，主要作品有長篇文論詩《論批評》（An Essay on Criticism）、《論人》（An Essay on Man）和長詩《鬈髪遇劫》（The Rape of the Lock）。
