The Chinese Dark Poet
Huang Xiang and His Colorful World

By Fu Zhengming

Huang Xiang, the protagonist of the book, was born in Guidong county in Hunan province on 26th December  1941. In the red China, he was imprisoned six times and severely persecuted on the ground of his free writing. As a self-educated poet and writer, he wrote secretly against the bondage of the totalitarian ideology to safe-guard the freedom of spirit for more than thirty years.

In 1993, he was invited to visit the United States where he was awarded the Freedom of Speech for Writers by the organization  " International Observation of Human Rights ".  In 1997, he and Qiuxiao Yulan ( Zhang Ling's pen name, she is also a poet ), his wife,  were forced into exile in the United States. His main writings are still forbidden in Chinese mainland. His books in Chinese have been published abroad include an anthology A Beast Binging, Never Drunk,  an essential collection of poems Forbidden Poems by Huang Xiang, a half-autobiographical epic novel  The Blood of Freedom, an autobiography The Sound and the Loneliness, collections of poems: A Nightmare: A Living Tombstone, The Big Artery, the Visible Body and the Invisible Body,  A House without Enclosure, Not a Monument: the Self-portrait of a Weak person,  I am a Singer of Rock and Roll in the Darkness, Talking to Myself in a Low Voice, and collections of essays: Constant Loneliness, Thunderstorm of  Meditation and A Showy Display of  My Wounds. Some of his writings  have been translated into English, French and Swedish and Japanese.

The Italian film director Federico Fellini once wrote, "All art is autobiographical; the pearl is the oyster's autobiography."  Huang Xiang ' s  poems, essays, stories and novels are not only excellent writings with autobiographical color but also a literary biography of modern and contemporary China. He is a great dark poet who pushes out the painful memories,  fears and struggles that haunt our lives,  creating wonderful poetic beauty in the darkness. His poetic creation is a miracle in the history of Chinese contemporary literature as Borobudur, the Buddhist monument on Java in Indonesia.

The book entitled The Chinese Dark Poet is a vivid description of Huang Xiang 's life and romance, tracing his creating road and evaluating the historical and aesthetic values of his  writings from the angles of comparative literature and poetics of color theory, which is associated with the theories of Chinese elements, Greek elements and Buddhist Elements.

Thus this book is the first special critical biography of Huang Xiang. The importance of this book, a scholarly but beautifully produced examination of Huang Xiang's writings, is paralleled by the emerging importance of the poet himself.

The Odyssey of the Tibetan Poets

This book under the title The Odyssey of the Tibetan Poets, written by Fu Zhengming and prefaced by the Dalai Lama, is an introduction to and review of Tibetan poets in exile and their poems or songs.

In a sense, nearly all of true Tibetan poets have suffered the fate of being exiled or self-exiled either in body or in soul since 1959, the year His Holiness the Dalai Lama was forced to leave the Snowland and seek refuge in India. The author brings together the Tibetan poets, both outside and inside Tibet, who write in Tibetan, Chinese or English.  Many poems quoted in this book are translated from Tibetan or English into Chinese for the first time. In their works, these Tibetan poets emphasize their individuality, specific situations, and true feelings in unique artistic style and mystic colors of the Tibetan Buddhism, which are woven into a comprehensive picture for the first time. On the background of Sino-Tibet conflict, the mixing of the two cultures and the meeting of Tibetan poetry and world literature, this book depicts the Tibetan poets’ hardship and freedom in exile, as well as their nostalgia and tragic spirit in their peaceful struggle against China’s autocratic rule. A mixture of their lives with lyrical emotions is a long story as national allegory.

The Poet-Monk With Crazy Wisdom

A Romantic Trilogy of Chögyam Trungpa

Five Hundred Poems from the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

About the Book

Omar Khayyam(1048-1131), the great Persian poet, philosopher, astronomer and mathematician, is famous in the world  through his Rubaiyat or quatrains poetically translated by Edward FitzGerald. Different from the Chinese translations made by other translators, Five Hundred Poems from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam with rich contents fully expresses the colorful imagery of the poet, who is like two-faced Janus, and even has multi-faceted personality. The poet’s mystic wine, his spiritual journey, political thought, search for liberty, humanistic concern for people, philosophy of enlightenment and tragic vision in his exile- all these aspects embody in the book are enough to stir an unprecedentedly aesthetic intoxication and thoughtful inspiration for the readers limited at the old Chinese translations of the Rubaiyat. The quatrains in this anthology are translated into Chinese with classical Chinese poetic forms or styles. The translator tries to create a reasonable balance between domestication and foreignization translation strategies.

About the Book

This book is a series of critical essays and articles chiefly relating to the works by two Chinese writers awarded to the Nobel Prize for Literature: Gao Xingjian, in 2000, and Mo Yan, in 2012. In both cases, the awarding of the prize was followed by controversies concerning both the writers' merits and defects in writing, their political stance, and more generally the political purposes of the prize itself.  From such perspectives as the criteria behind the choices of Nobel laureates, aesthetics, philosophy, literary psychology, history and comparative literature, the author of the book deeply studied the aspects of the works by Gao and Mo. On this basis, with a vital humanistic spirit, the author analyzed the literary creation of the two writers.

In the study of Gao and his works, the author anatomized his morbid characters and his cynical trend of only interesting himself, being not sincere and mocking all the sublime but himself. In the study of Mo and his works the author anatomized Mo’s thought trend of nationalism, statism and his writing trend that falls shortof the aesthetic ideal. Meanwhile, the author plausibly criticized Swedish Academy which awarded Gao and Mo the prize.

In the research field of Gao and Mo and their works, this book is an independent and rigorous academic work appealing to both refined and popular taste, a combination of scoring highly for both quality of information and readability.
