Places I Have Lived
Translated by Professor Jan Walls
I love Beijing. The fountainhead of my life comes from her ancient city
walls, and she will always affect my Peripatetic nostalgia. Her various
poses stir up ripples in my heart.
I love Nanjing. My carefree childhood was embraced by the gentle waters
south of the River. Purple Mountain towers over the Yangtze River port,
and subtropical sunlight lets parasol trees shade every street and lane.
I love Inner Mongolia. Whenever I recall the north wind whistling through
the barracks, the flickering of pulsating candlelight in the darkness of
night, my longing for the light is doubled. The hardships of life imbued
me with courage, and even if I should become penniless one day, I would
never again sink into stifling despair.
I love Canada. Twenty-some years ago I walked through the customs gate
and was greeted by "Canada welcomes you" in English and French. My first
night of spring, gazing into the distance from Mount Royal in Montreal, I
vowed "Now I will settle down and get on with my life as a permanent
citizen."
