Garlic Lovers Celebrate in Gilroy

Gilroy, California known as the “Garlic Capital of the World”, presents the 34th Gilroy Garlic Festival scheduled for July 28. The festival is presented by Raley’s, Bel Air and Nob Hill Foods and will take place at Christmas Hill Park.

A small community in Santa Clara County with just over 48,000 residents, Gilroy enjoys an ideal climate for agriculture with temperatures ranging from an average low of 60 to a mid-summer high of 90 degrees. Receiving approximately 20 inches of rainfall per year presents perfect conditions for farmers specializing in garlic and other agricultural foods.

Sitting between two active earthquake faults, the Calaveras and the Sargent faults, Gilroy has experienced two large earthquakes in the past four decades.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival began in 1979 and has grown to one of the largest events in the region with an average attendance now of over 125,000 people. The festival generates over two million dollars for the community. The festival features a “recipe contest and a cook-off” for amateur chefs. Basic rules for competing include using at least six cloves of garlic in each recipe. The contests are required to prepare enough of the recipe dish to serve six judges and submit one for presentation. There is no limit as to how many recipes contestants may submit; registration applications must be submitted in advance. Professional chefs or food stylists are not allowed to participate.

Gourmet Alley consists of booths offering several different food specialties that feature garlic as well as vendors selling gifts, crafts and unique items.

Entertainment is provided throughout the event utilizing three venues and stages as well as musicians strolling about the event. Various styles of music such as jazz, country, Reggae, swing, rock ‘n roll and blues can be enjoyed by all during this very popular weekend event.

Gilroy Garlic Festival: Discount Tickets

The 34th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival (July 27, 28, and 29, 2012) is a popular South Bay tradition billed as the “Ultimate Summer Food Fair” — three days of incredible food, beverages, arts & crafts, and live entertainment. You can save $2 off the gate price when you buy tickets in advance, either online or at one of the markets listed below. And residents of Gilroy can get a $5 discount for Friday.

The event includes dozens of concerts and plenty of kids activities. In 2011, ”Top Chef” Angelo Sosa and country recording artist Kip Moore headlined the entertainment throughout the event.

大蒜節在gilory郊外的公園（Christmas Hill Park)裏舉辦，門票17美金，不便宜。



在加州是最有名的大蒜產地。也隻有美國這樣的怪國家才有人去參加蔬菜的節日吧，基本上就是吃大蒜的食品和喝啤酒。





即使門票、飲料、食物都不便宜，但每年仍擠進十多萬人，動用超過四千人的義工，真是盛況空前，辦得有聲有色，不愧是世界級的節慶。

Gilroy以前是全美大蒜的主要產地，因為種種原因，產量逐年下降，現在已經風光不再。但每年舉辦大蒜節的傳統仍然還在。
