我對孩子學中文的一點心得

1. Do not push your children
I really believe some kids might have language skills or talents to master more than one language. If your children have limited talents in language, do not push them. May you dig out his/her other talents like sports or music.

2. Criticize yourself more instead of blaming on your children
My daugther might be the only kid who could speak Chinese fluently in this small town. I observe my other Chinese friends in the town. None of them develop habits to regularly communicate with their kids in Chinese. Usually the couple talk between themselves, or talk with their parents. But they seldom have a rich and long talk with their kids in Chinese.

3. Do not limit your talk into daily life topics
I like mentioning various topics with my daugther every day. Sometimes I talk her about the history of China, the cultural differences between China and US, etc. That is partially why she can talk something besides eating or dressing up.

4. Send Children to China
I send my daugther to China whenever possible and she likes Chinese food and Chinese.

5. Being proud of multilingualism
I found a lot of kids refused to speak Chinese due to peer pressure. My daugther was educated in a different way. She thinks she is smart to be able to speak more than one lauguage and she shows off every time she has a chance. Due to her influence, her classmates would say hello to me in Chinese and tell me "I know a little bit Chinese and I am still learning".
My daughter chose to enroll in French school because that is a language her parents could not understand. She is so proud of being a multilingual speaker. I really encourage and award her of being such a kid. It works.

Above are some points I have in the process of raising my daughter. May it be of any help.
