社區大學教書手記: 不愉快的經曆

    上回寫教書手記還是第一堂課後的記錄,之所以喜歡第一堂課,是因為我對每個學生的印象是全新的,豪無貶褒,學生們對我也是如此。

        兩周前的一天,我在複印小測卷子,一個老教授經過,問我:“你班上有個叫D.的學生吧。”

    “是啊,他反應很快,可是很愛說話。”

    “去年D.在我班上。他相當自我(His ego is very high),曾因吸毒,和失控而被另一所大學開除。”

   “他看上去蠻樂觀積極,沒想到有這樣曆史。”我想著D.中等個子,金色短發,藍眼睛,平時愛發言,上課喜歡和周圍同學聊天。看不出,他有這段不光彩的往事。

    老教授看我一臉疑問,反安慰我道:“他是讓人頭疼的學生,但我想他參加戒毒和憤怒控製(Anger control program)等訓練,也該懂事了,他是個頗有小聰明的孩子。這學期他修你的課,你是女教師,也許他會收斂些。”

    上周三課上,我看見D.在電腦前偷偷地玩弄手機,像是在寫文字信息(text messages),學校規定,學生上課一定要關手機,若上課手機響或寫文字信息,學生要離開課堂。開學初,D.手機響過,我給他警告,如今,他又違規,我到他身旁,告訴他,上課若玩手機,需離開教室,免得影響班級。他收了手機,臉色很不好,我繼續講課,大約5分鍾,D.仍然很氣憤的樣子,他可能為了控製情緒,披了大衣,自己到教室外。大約10幾分鍾,他回到教室。下課後,D.朝我走了過來,我以為他是來向我道歉的。以往也有學生,不小心忘了關手機,或課堂失禮,會課後主動找我道歉。可是D.居然指著我說:“我很不喜歡你隻抓我把柄。(I do not appreciate you pick on me.)也有別的學生上課上網,為什麽就找我的麻煩。”我吃了一驚,回道:“你是唯一玩手機的學生,有個別學生上網,他們事先告訴過我,想上網查找一些新學的技術用語。”D.仍然道:“我就是很不喜歡你專門找我麻煩。”他態度如此傲慢,我想起老教授的話,於是我對他說:“請學會尊重他人。(Please show respect.)”他離開了教室。

   我教的哈城社區大學學生參差不齊,這兩年美國經濟蕭條,社區大學很受歡迎,不少本科生為了給家裏節省學費,或減輕自己貸款讀書的壓力,前兩年在社區大學上基本課,然後再轉到較好的大學修完課畢業。也有的學生是社會上失業人員,或想改換工作,也有孩子長大後回到校園的媽媽學生。

    今天清晨天上飄著小雪,路滑風也大,我早早就開車到辦公室備課,和往常一樣,上課前5分鍾,我在心裏作了默禱。上午10點的課,D.遲到了幾分鍾,他進來時,一股濃重的煙味隨風湧入教室,我先想D.一定是煙客,但很快意識到,那味道不是一般煙的味,可能是毒品的味道。課堂上,D.打瞌睡坐著,我提了個問題,讓他回答,他搖了搖頭,我到他麵前,問道:“你睡了?”他勉強張開眼睛,而那雙眼睛毫無光澤,昏暗,無神,卻滿是仇恨,陰晦,那不是開學初積極樂觀的D.,那是被惡魔纏身的D.。我倒吸了一口涼氣,繼續上課,但我已決定不再看D.。就是在以後的課上,我也將盡少地找他“麻煩”,曾經有學生向老師威脅要帶槍來班級,不但區立大學有,州立大學,私立大學,甚至高中也有類似例子,如幾年前科羅拉多州Columbine高中生槍擊事件。

    剩下的半個多學期,我將不再和D.學生“對峙”(confront him),但我會為他祈禱,願他早日脫離導致他墮落的惡魔。想起《聖經》裏一句經文:“因我們並不是與屬血氣的爭戰,乃是與那些執政的、掌權的、管轄這幽暗世界的,以及天空屬靈氣的惡魔爭戰。”(For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 弗Ephesians 6:12)祈禱D.學生早日戒毒,改過自新,作神國度裏的新人。

 
美國學校自從1963年將禱告從校園禁止後,校風日下,以下是一些數據1:

1963到1988年數據:

* 未婚性交增加200%(若女孩子單獨分類,未婚性交增加500%)

* 未婚懷孕增加400%

* 性病增加200%

* 自殺人數增加400%

其它數據:

* 18歲以前生育孩子的學生,有一半沒有完成高中學業(63年以前96%等到18歲以後生育)

* 早育母親隻掙平均收入一半的錢,大多數靠政府福利維持生活,而且惡性循環:早育母親的女兒10幾歲懷孕生子,又產生無技能,靠福利維持生活的新一代

* 14到25歲的未婚媽媽,三分之二生活水平在貧困線下

SAT成績:

* 63年到80年平均成績下降90分

* 1950年,84%的大學生知道馬尼拉是菲律賓首都;1984年,隻有27%的大學生知道。

2004年美國科羅拉多州Columbine高中生槍擊事件中彈而亡的女學生Rachel 父親寫的詩:

This poem, written by her father, Darrell Scott, aptly describes the problems we face, and provide the answer, for those courageous enough to believe:

You've outlawed simple prayer.你已經禁止簡單的禱告

The banning of prayer in assemblies affected students. Since 1963:

*

Premarital sexual activity increased over 200 percent (for girls alone, premarital sexual activity increased over 500 percent);

*

Pregnancies to unwed mothers went up almost 400 percent;

*

Gonorrhoea (Sexually Transmitted Disease) went up over 200 percent;

*

Number of suicides increased over 400 percent.

These give rise to secondary consequences, such as:

*

Only half of those who give birth before age 18 complete high school (as compared with 96 percent of those who postpone childbearing);

*

On average they earn half as much money and are far more likely to be dependent on welfare. A negative cycle is created, with daughters falling pregnant during teenage years, thus leading to generations of unskilled peoples being dependent and trapped on welfare;

*

Of those families headed by a mother age 14-25, two-thirds live below the poverty level.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is an academic test measuring the developed verbal and mathematical reasoning skills of a student preparing to enter college. The three areas of SAT testing with individual documentation are SAT mathematics scores, SAT verbal scores, and SAT total scores (the combination of the mathematics and verbal scores).

SAT Total Scores have declined steadily, dropping over 90 points from 1963 to 1980, to the lowest in the industrialised world. Although actual grades have risen, their SATS were decreasing. Hence academic standards have dropped to accommodate mediocrity.

*

In 1950, 84 percent of college students knew that Manilla was the capital of the Philippines. In 1984 it had dropped to only 27 percent. “We cannot expect to be a world leader if our populace doesn’t even know who the rest of the world is!”
