Kobe is not right, physically. He didn't attempt a single shot in the first quarter, as Smith and Carter noticed immediately, "when was it last time it happened?" - "That playoff game against Phoenix" (as I mentioned couple of days ago). That's a nice gesture to teammates who got it going early on. But his shots were so off in the game, it's just unbelievable.
Boozer is not right, physically. You can't say he didn't try, but he just couldn't handle ZR or MG - he couldn't guard them out at the 15 feet, neither could he bang with them down low. His own shots were off, and he worried too much about being blocked.
Hill is solid, as usual. He rebounds, defends, and shoots his jumper (not as accurate as some nights), but hey, he put up a turn around jumper and scored. What else can you ask?
ED is working hard. He worked hard on rebound and defence. Tonight, Lakers' big men came out in gang, challenged better front court of Memphis. Unlike some games earlier in the season, where you only see one out of 3 guys put in 100% effort. Tonight, they definitely jumped out of the gate with a mission in mind. I can see both Hill and ED growing in front of my eyes, that is very encouraging.
Young has talent, and his returning definitely helps, but he played too casually tonight. Some of the shot selection, not getting back on defense after missed or made shots, and also missed quite some defensive assignments. He's young, and it takes time to correct those bad habits.
The Price is Right, tonight. He made some big shots and big plays today, and that completely caught me off guard, because he was utter garbage for quite a few games.
Last but not least, Lin, only if the game had ended in the first quarter:) Jeremy was active and confident in the first quarter. He scored, assisted, charged with pace, and he fought through screens to chase Conley. Then, he was like, oops, am I shooting too much? Am I in spot light? You can sense some hesitation in his moves and decisions. But still, unlike some of his other games, completely turned off after a good start, he still worked hard. In the fourth quarter, he was concentrated at the perimeter, and disrupted in the paint. I didn't like those 2 fastbreaks that he set for 3-pointers. Young was bailed out with FTs, and the result was good, while Kobe couldn't throw the ball into the ocean. It's not like Lakers are a great 3-pointer team, and it's not like that Young was sizzling hot with his shooting hands. Those should be hard-charged drive towards the basket for potential setups for dunks or own layups. Lin didn't take shots in the flow as he did in the first quarter - open 3s out of screen or in rhythm, drive and step back pull up, elbow open jumper. Most of the shots he took later were almost like he really didn't want to shot and was forced to. When he had his mind set, and went in full smooth motion to gather himself and prepare for the shots, he scored in the first quarter. For whatever reason, that didn't carry over the rest of the game.
Defensively, Lakers is not disciplined enough to handle those 2-man games between Conley and his big men. Lin sometimes didn't get enough help to put some resistence at Conley. But more games and practices could help, as they have already improved. This was not a layup and open shots drill for the opposing team.
I see lots of positives in this game, especially in Lin and some young players. They are playing as a team, and more importantly, you can talk about plays, talents, opponent strength, but this is the game you can't say that a single Lakers player didn't try. That alone, worth a lot, and if they can keep the effort going, they will all improve. But, can Kobe's body hold?
A superior opponent, off (hurt?) Kobe and Boozer, it was an expected loss, but they actually had decent chance to pull the upset. There is no moral victory in a loss, but there is feel-good story. That's a baby step in the right direction.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
