Today was our second day in Seville. We planned to see Plaza de España, Cathedral de Sevilla, and Basilica de la Macarena.
Plaza de España was built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. I think it is the prettiest place in Seville. The Plaza is a huge half-circle with buildings running around the edge accessible over the moat by beautiful bridges.
1. Walking to Plaza de España. This is the alley where our apartment is. It was really quiet in the morning.
2. By the walls of the Plaza are many tiled alcoves, each representing a different province of Spain.

After Plaza de España, we went to Cathedral de Sevilla (I'll have a separate post on that), had lunch, then went to Basilica de la Macarena.

We had never heard of Basilica de la Macarena until the front desk lady told us about it the day before. She said it is the most important place to be in Seville during Holy Week (which was the following week), so we thought we checked it out. The church is quite small with a few ornate statues that people carry through the city streets during Holy Week processions. Macarena is the most revered image in Seville.

On a side note, we arrived at the church at 3:45 pm and found it was closed. It was their siesta hour (from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm). Can you believe that? Between short hours, early closing, and siesta hour, you really need to budget extra time when visiting Spain.
