Itinerary: Reykjavik -> Vik -> Höfn -> Egilsstaðir -> Lake Mývatn -> Ólafsvík -> Reykjavik

Iceland, a tiny little country in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, has about 300,000 people, 60% of them lives in the capital (Reykjavik) and its neighboring communities, making it easy to find solitude everywhere else.

The local currency is the Icelandic króna (ISK). Since its value collapsed dramatically during the 2008 economic crisis, prices appear to be more affordable for the visitors this year, but Iceland remains a very expensive place to visit. When we were there (late August 2009), 1 USD was about 127.5 ISK.

We spent 10 days in Iceland.
Day 1: Drove to Vik from Keflavik International Airport (KEF)
Day 2: Visited Skaftafell National Park
Day 3: Visited Jökulsárlón
Day 4: Visited Jökulsárlón again, and drove to Egilsstaðir
Day 5: Drove to Lake Mývatn
Day 6: Visited Akureyri and Húsavík
Day 7: Drove to Ólafsvík on Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Day 8: Drove to Reykjavik
Day 9: Visited Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, and Gullfoss
Day 10: Visited National Museum of Iceland in Reykjavik, before taking the afternoon flight home at KEF

All in all, the trip was good. We saw some stunningly beautiful scenery, ate tasty Icelandic seafood and lamb, and endured Iceland's relentless rain and wind.

(To be continued)
