Iceland (7) - To Ólafsvík

Day 7
Today was a long driving day. We left Lake Mývatn after 8:00 am, and reached Ólafsvík after 5:00 pm. The drive from Akureyri to Brú, where we left the Ring Road to go to Ólafsvík, was relatively boring. After we got on Snæfellsnes Peninsula, things got prettier again.

1. Every autumn, horses and sheep are rounded up and sorted using pen like this.


2. To get to Ólafsvík, we had to leave the Ring Road at Brú, took secondary roads (route 61, 59, then 54). Route 59 and sections of route 54 were unpaved but fine for cars. After Dettifoss, road like this looked silky smooth to us.

4. Stykkishólmur Church. Stykkishólmur is a fishing town located on the north shore of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, 10 km off route 54.

9. We reached Ólafsvík after 5:00 pm, found a place to stay at Hotel Ólafsvík, the one and only hotel in town. I think there were four couples total staying at the hotel that night.
