Nashville, Tennessee (1)

Tired of staying home week after week, Dave and I took a drive to Nashville, Tennessee the past long weekend. We couldn't visit everything in two days, but we hit most of the major attractions. Here are some of the highlights:

No. 1 The nightlife.
There are so many bars in downtown Nashville, between 2nd and 5th Ave on Broadway, and on 2nd Ave going north from Broadway. All of them have live music at night, and the singers are pretty good.

1. Tootsies is supposedly the oldest honky tonk in Nashville and has a history of great acts showing up to play before or after they played at the Grand Ole Opry which was held in the Ryman Auditorium right behind it. Inside, every inch of the wall is covered with autographed photos of country music legends.

2. While Dave was taking the picture above, one guy (the one in the middle) walked by and posed for him. His mother (behind him) told us that he would be deployed to Afghanistan next week. We wished him luck.

3. The night we went to the Wildhorse Saloon (another famous joint in town), CMT (Country Music Television) was taping their reality show "Can you Duet" there. The celebrity judges were: (from left) Aimee Mayo, Naomi Judd, and Brett Manning. You could go in and watched the show anytime, and it's all free.

No. 2 Jack Daniel's Distillery.
Located in Lynchburg, Tennessee, 75 miles south east of Nashville, the distillery definitely worths a visit. They offer free tour every fifteen minutes, 7 days a week. The tour lasts about one hour and fifteen minutes, starts with an introduction video, a short bus ride, and a walking tour of the distillery. Our tour guide, Marge, who is about 55 years old with a cute southern accent, is one of the best tour guides I have ever seen. She not only told us stories about Mr. Jack Daniel, how the whiskey is made and sold etc during the tour, she also made everything sound funny. Even when one couple forgot their camera on the shuttle bus and they started to bitch at each other, Marge made joke out of it and everyone including the couple had a laugh. What a fun tour we had. I'd visit the distillery again just to enjoy her free "comedy show".

4. At the Visitor Center. Jack Daniel before and after. The clear one is the new Jack before it is stored in the Barrel House. Depends on where the barrel is stored, different grades of Jack are produced. A is the lowest grade (green label Jack). B and C are higher grades, which are sold as the black label Jack (Old No. 7) and Single Barrel Jack. If going through a second mellowing process, then it is the Gentleman Jack.

5. The mellowing process. Jack comes through these pipes and drips into the charcoal. It goes through about 10 ft of charcoal before coming out.

6. Inside one of the Barrel Houses. Thousands of barrels are stored here for 6 - 7 years to age, so Jack gets its taste and color.

7. A jam session in a small cafe at Lynchburg.
