Very nice. You probably stayed in Ximendin which was used to be pretty wild area. Once was asked if I needed girls myself and if you see very old guys and young girls then it might be sex for the money. It was an area young people would go, trendy but not very high class.
Beitou was famous for its hot spring and prostitutes. But it was somewhat cleaned up not long ago but still a favorite spot for old male Japanese tourists, guess they can find the old prostitutes they knew before.
Been in that overnight bookstore once. Not many people was there. Books are very expensive. Again, probably good for tourists to say been there, nothing else.
I sound too negative? If you felt it and then you are right. There was pretty hideous undercurrent going on in Taiwan. Tourists did not care and would not feel a thing. But local was very uneasy and restless and the future is bleak in many people's mind. That itself is remarkable since people in Taiwan usually was very mild and have take-it-easy attitude. The society was transformed and splintered, not a good sign. Oh, that cheap price of stuff? You enjoyed but local merchants felt pretty bad about that. Monthly income on average is the same as it was 18 years ago.
