樑上有雙燕 翩翩雄與雌 Up on the roof were two swallows,
Gliding with joy as a couple.
泥銜兩椽間 一巢生四兒 They built their nest between two beams,
For the young chicks they were rearing.
四兒日夜長 素食聲孜孜 The four young ones grew day and night,
Chirped constantly to beg for food.
青蟲不易捕 黃口無飽期 Green worms were difficult to catch,
But yellow mouths still asked for more.
嘴爪雖慾弊 心力不知疲 Tho’ beaks and claws were worn and ruined,
Yet their hearts knew no weariness.
須臾十來往 猶恐巢中飢 Came and went over and over,
Feared for the hunger in the nest.
辛勤三十日 母瘦雛漸肥 Toiled and labored for thirty days,
Mother became thin, the chicks fat.
喃喃教言語 一一刷毛衣 Patiently taught the young to speak,
Carefully brushed their feather coat.
一旦羽翼成 引上庭樹枝 Alas their wings were fully formed,
To the branches they were guided.
擧翅不囘顧 隨風四散飛 Spread the wings with no back glances,
Flew with the wind to far corners.
雌雄空中鳴 聲盡呼不歸 Crying and calling in the air,
Voices were gone but none return.
卻入空巢裏 啁啾終夜悲 Back to the empty nest they went,
And sadly wailed for the whole night.
燕燕爾勿悲 爾當反自思 Swallow! Swallow! Seize your sorrow.
Consider what you had once done.
思爾為雛日 高飛背母時 Remember days when you were young,
Away from mother you had flown.
當時父母念 今日爾應知 How your parents had missed you then,
Now should surely be understood.
